Remove glass from wing mirror housing

I want to repair (using aluminium solder/braze) a driver's side wing mirror with a broken alloy casting to keep as a "spare". To do this I need to get inside the plastic housing and remove the piece of broken casting. I cannot figure out how to remove the glass from the housing without breaking it. Does anyone know how this is done?
(ps Ive already bought a 2nd hand one to put on teh car)
