Would it not be an idea to contact VW with these details to alert them to the poor mannufacturing of the original geearbox? Maybe it will encourage them to devlop a stronger box and maybe offer a discount to us Gti owners? ?

I think it's a little late for that now. It went out of production 6 years ago!

I know this, but surely for the fact that the gearboxes have been suplus to normal VW standard, sending them evidence may allow them to provide replacement box's at a cheaper rate for inconvenience??? Just a thought...

Noise relates to the box. the stick going all over the place could be the linkage though?

Pop off the gaitor and take a look at the linkage, see if it's still all working alright.

hi guys :)

just purchased a mk5 polo Gti

i know they have problems with the gearbox's....mines on 61k and the original box...it feels great, really crisp

BUT i use the car daily and it looks like the furthest someone has got on the standard box is around 100k

i want to prepare for the inevitable, so the car is off the road for the least amount of time as its my daily and used for 50 miles a day

my question is, where do i buy a gearbox from? anyone know anywhere online?

am i right in saying its the rivets that fail...and they were improved by using stainless bolts instead?

basically, i want to buy a gearbox that has been reconditioned so come the day when it all goes pop....i can take it to a garage for them to change it over

OR how long have people gone without a car for?
even when it was taken to VW?

help the paranoid GTi driver lol

Best bet is 2 buy a second hand one off some one on here or off ebay (they come up every now and then)
and get it refurbed yourself using some were that can be recomended 2 you by people that have had boxes done before!

Then like you said sit it in your garage till that day comes then it a few hour job for any garage 2 swap them over!

I was lucky however, when my boxes started 2 whine i would drive 2 work early and take the box out before work started,
lunch time strip it down and replace the bearings and seals! Then after work pop it back in within an hour with the help of work mates and drive home that night :-)

But if u dont have axcess 2 a million pounds worth of garage and tools (and if you have a spare couple of houndred pounds) having a rebuilt box sat in the garage waiting is the next best thing!

just what ever you do dont let it stop you enjoying your car!

Good garages will turn over a gearbox repair in a day, max two. I'd just keep money aside and if it goes book it straight in.

GTI Gearbox Failure

Car registration date (Month/Year): 03/2001
Mileage when gearbox Failed: 67,996
Month/Year when gearbox failed: 04/2009

Was the failed Gearbox

Garage Address: 8 Peart Road, Derwent Howe Industrial Estate, Workington, Cumbria, CA14 3YT

Gearbox completely rebuilt with new bearings, new mount and SACH clutch kit fitted.
