Clutch cable problem

I got a call a couple of weeks ago "clutch has gone, pedal goes to the floor"........... so instructions were dispensed to start the car in gear and drive it the 400 metres home, switch off to stop. The cable had snapped.

All that went well, and because the car was needed I just got a replacement cable from Eurocarparts. Not ideal, but at least the car was mobile again.

Over the past couple of weeks I have regularly had to adjust the cable as the biting point got closer to the floor and the pedal got heavier.

Today I took the cable out again and noticed that the rubber cushion where it goes behind the notch on the gearbox was in bad shape, pretty much destroyed and hanging off.

I have adjusted the outer cable length, reconstructed the rubber and put some oil around the pivot arm, made sure that is turning freely and adjusted the clutch again, but it just doesn't feel right and it is heavy

Is it just a rubbish ECP component, should I bother with a warranty replacement, or is it time to bin it, put it down to experience and bin it.

Or....... is there something else going on ?

What cables have you used ?

The pedal box is very common on them for cracking and eventually bite is on the floor. But I would get a new proper cable first and try that

Thanks for that.

I have already done the pedal box, and until the cable broke the pedal felt fine.

It's worth me having a look just to be sure, there's no creaks though

Sounds like either the clutch release bearing (or the hat) is worn, or you have pedal box issues. The pedal should always be smooth

Problem solved.......... it was the awful Pagid clutch cable.

TPS near me are useless and expensive, so I found a s/h genuine cable on ebay.

I fitted it today, put a bit of oil & wd40 down the outer cable to make it really smooth, fitted the cable and had a lovely light clutch pedal again. :D

The Pagid one had failed by the rubber at the gearbox guide tearing off and becoming very very resistant to movement. If I hadn't already strengthened my pedal box this would have done it in
