Would 8x18" wheels with 225/40 tyres cause any problems on the Polo GTI (AW)?
I'm just wondering would they fit nicely and would it affect the speedometer too much?

Welcome to the forum @yeahhnl.
You’ll need to consider the wheel offset as well as wheel width, wheel diameter and tyre size. A quick search on this forum board for 8Jx18” returned the following discussion threads that should help you;

Quite a few GTI owners on the forum have fitted 225/40 R18’s. There’s a useful calculator on www.willtheyfit.com which will calculate the critical differences of any new wheel / tyre combination you’re thinking of getting compared to your existing wheel / tyre set up. If you go for an 8J wheel with too aggressive an offset and 225/40 R18 tyres, then it increases the risk of rubbing / clearance issues. However, once you’ve input your existing and new wheel / tyre details into the calculator and you know the critical differences, you should have a better idea if your preferred set up will work.
Bear in mind that;

Bear in mind that;
- the spoke design on some aftermarket wheels might give insufficient clearance between the reverse side of the spokes and the brake calipers. If so, it might be necessary to fit spacers to give adequate clearance, which would in turn increase the risk of the front face of the wheel and tyre protruding too far outwards and making contact with the wheel arch edge when the suspension is under load.
- if your car is lowered - or if you’re planning on lowering it at some time in the future - fitting wider wheels and tyres increases the risk of rubbing issues.
