After having a made up solution for a long time it was time to do it right 👌

Do you like it? It pisses me off no end on my ID3 (standard fit).

Stray across the line of a road where cars park across the edge, purely to avoid clipping the cars and the steering wheel gives you a nudge back to where the parked cars are.

Temporary narrowing of a motorway lane with cones? The camera ignores the cones and only registers the road markings, nudging you towards the cones that you're avoiding to stay off-centre within that lane.

It only measures the width between 2 lanes and aims to put you dead centre, but does not account for the actual gap present within those 2 lane markings because of other obstacles present within the lane markings.

It's becoming standard fit on all new models because you can't achieve NCAP 5 star rating without it.

It's a device that enables people to drive.without paying attention to the road ahead. Perfect for driving texters but of very limited use to people who keep their eyes on the road. I'd permanently turn mine off if I could.

@Scotty_boy vw; hats off to you for having the knowledge and skill to able to do this and the many other changes you’ve made to your car. I personally don’t like the idea of Lane Assist or many of the other nannying driver aids that are currently being fitted by car manufacturers. Based on what I’ve read on other forums, Lane Assist does seem to be unpopular with the vast majority of owners whose cars have this feature, and switching it off has become part of their normal starting procedure.

However, as said above, well done for accomplishing this 👍.

Respect for doing it, but I have to question why when it's a feature I've switched off in every car we've had with it fitted.
The Kia Sportage had it, the Evoque has it.
It's unfortunately rather easily triggered in the Evoque via a steering wheel button and the wife describes it as "feeling like the car has a puncture"

Interesting info, I wonder why you can't.
The Evoque has 'emergency lane assist' which can be permanently deactivated via the settings menu.
Then an on-demand lane assist which you have to ask for via a wheel button.
This sounds like something I'd scratch the ID3 and (if applicable) the ID4 off my list for. :(

Presumably when your Evoque was made, these options weren't requirements for one reason or another, but now they are. It's like not being able to permanently turn off stop-start without using VCDS or similar to mess with battery requirements.

Now Lane assist is an NCAP 5 star rating requirement, it needs to be on by default and you need to switch off every time you don't want it. Next time Evoque gets a new model or facelift, it's almost a cert they'll go the same way if that's the one barrier to them getting an NCAP 5 star rating.

These things are getting forced on all marques.

It's a 2020 model and they're already 5 stars.
Maybe the emergency lane assist defaults back to 'on' when we switch off, I'll check tonight and if it's back to being ticked I'll know.
If it is defaulting back to on it must work very unobtrusively, as it's never shown any sign of activating.
Applying the on-demand lane assist via the S/W is horrible, it makes the car pull strongly (like a flat tyre).

The Evoque got a bit of a facelift in 2020, but if yours is pre-facelift it's NCAP rating will be based on the 2015 full facelift, and the 5 star requirements at that time. Back in 2015, lane assist eouldn't hsve been part of the criteria, and without that requirement, you wouldn't be required to switch off at every ignition cycle if you font want it on.

Either way, lane assist is inot a driving aid, it's idiot-proofing against people not keeping an eye on the road, but it's more likely to annoy or potentially steer you into a parked car that's encroaching on a lane.

It was more than a facelift, it was given a whole new model designation (L551) in 2019.
Easiest way to spot the an L551 Evoque is the retractable/motorised door handles, which I love.
Cars with permanent doorhandles don't half look crap when you're used to those. 8)

Anyway, I forgot to bloody check if the lane assist has stayed 'off'

You're adding everything I'd like to remove on my ID3! Technically impressive but a PITA in operation.

The traffic sign assist will frequently pick up a 30/40/50mph sign up a sliproad off the motorway you're doing 70mph on and look to apply the brakes to slow you down to that speed. Pretty much all the marques with this tech have the same issue - Kia, Merc, BMW, Nissan, GM etc.

Ironically, the wife's Evoque threw up an error on the dash yesterday.
"AEB (automatic emergency braking) not operational" - so there's something wrong with the front facing camera or other.
I honestly wish these driver aids just go away, ABS and ESC is fine.
I'll happily stick to lanes and brake myself thanks

Having spent a day test driving a few EVs the other day with my parents, who've now just ordered an Enyaq, I can't say the lane assist stuff bothered me. Apparently in the ID.3 it's a lot better on the more recent software revision. The Enyaq we tested had Travel Assist, and I tried it on a dual carriageway and it worked well, but none of it was kicking up a fuss on more rural or town roads. And my mum didn't notice or comment on it, which surprised me. We'll just have to see if I get calls asking how to turn it off once the Enyaq arrives!
