I can be done, and has been done on the continent before. You may have to modify the engine bay to get it in and have a custom made engine subframe. Then there is the box, driveshafts etc.
The problem along with size is the weight, it's far too heavy for a Mk 3. It would cause lots of understeer and ruin the balance.

yeah I have thought about the weight. I think a VR6 engine weighs about as much as a complete MkIII!!!
Do you have any pics of the conversions??
I would also need to run 15in wheels so that the big brakes fit bihind....
It's just I don't know if I want to do another mkII Golf when I already have a car to put the engine in.
Or do I sell the VR6 and with the money build a 1.6l for the GT??

The Mk 4 polo 1.4 16v. It fits in, but I think the engine mounts need to be modified but i'm not entirely sure. There was a red Mk 3 Polo in the march 2001 edition of the golf mag. This had a 1.4 16V engine with jenvy tb's running 140bhp.
The small block 1600 is supposed to go straight in and the GT head apparently fits this too.
The Mk4 Polo / Seat ibiza 1.4 8v is a straight swap and the GT running gear can be used on them.
Then there is increasing the capacity of the GT block by using a 1W crank and/or boring it out.

I've decided.
Building another mk2 Golf will cost me thousands. I can't see a full on project costing anything less than £13k..
So. I'm gonna sell my current Mk2, and I also want to sell my VR6.
This means that I can spend a few thousand on the GT.
My plan is to keep the polo pretty much as it is now, but I want a super fast engine in it. I saw a few 1.4 16v's at vwmania, and now believe this is the way forward. Except I want a g60 supercharger bolted to one!!
A set of coilovers, some poly bushes, and uprated anti-roll bars and I am good to go!!
Will cost a fraction of what a VR mk2 Golf would cost, and I reckon that the polo would end up a quicker and better handling car!
Time to start saving my pennies.
