Rear screen washer help?!

Post by JKM_GTI »

My rear screen washer is leaking, it’s leaking onto the boot lock, so now the car is telling me the boot is open (it comes on and off every now and then).

What do you think could be the problem? I am sure I remember reading a post about this else where but cannot find the damn post!

Is it an expensive fix or could I have a go at doing it myself, if any parts need replacing (I think the pipe may have split) what part number is this?

Thanks in advance!

You can certainly check it out for yourself and most likely fix the problem too.

The water pipe may have come off, esp in this cold weather it freezes and pops off when you try to use it

Anyway, open your boot door, then in the two 'handles' of the boot door black lining you will find a screw, remove the screw from each handle

Next carefully pry a corner with a plastic tool or similar - the lining is held in by clips all the way around the edge. It may be very stiff at first, but it will come off...

Then you will see the water pipe and boot lock electronics... hopefully pipe is off, so just put it back in place and your sorted. Perhaps put some 'gaffer tape' around the joint to keep it more secure.

When I had this problem, I let the lining's fabric backing dry out first, against a radiator before replacing it back in the car, clipping it back in all the way around and replacing the two screws from the handles

Dry off the boot electronics too, hopefully the PCB is not screwed from the water - if so might need replacing, see what happens when it is dry (if the light on dash goes out and then test if it comes on when boot is open, like it should do)

If its more than the pipe popped off try post a pic or something, im sure it can be repaired

Long post :D :)

Had the same problem with my car. Like inder said my pipe had popped out. I decided to replace my tailgate lock just incase as it would save me from opening everything again.

Was exactly what you said it was.....five min fix, best of all it cost nothing!

The electronics seem fine, little corrosion, seems to be working fine.

Thanks for the top advice!

Cheers mate :D

inder, i had this problem but unfortunately my light is still con constantly and my boot light stays on - guessin this is because the sensing system for the boot light and dash display are the same.

I think i need a new connector ( the one from the edc with the three wires ) as it was covered in blue gunge from washer fluid..

can they be bought? and will it fix the prob?

cheers

Hi m8,

Yes, if the electronics are screwed in the boot, the light on the dash will be constantly on on just not working etc.. sounds like its shorted out, due to the water?

I have a part that is for a switch in the boot, but im not 100% sure its to tell if boot is open or not, its part:

1J6 953 230 A

I've got it right here in my hand now and its a two pin plug with short piece of wire to a microswitch, just bought on a whim for cheap

Another switch is listed too, it could be this one, seems more likely (listed as door contact switch, but then, what it my switch for above?):

6X0 947 569

Could be one of these, got a pic of your damaged bit? See if we can work it out...

edit: re-read your post, yes you can just get the little black connectors. not sure if you just need that or a new switch etc...

Hey inder,

Its the connector that is located on the back of the book latch. Am hoping its just the connector as it was covered in green gel....?

I put wd40 on the switch connector hoping to get rid of water - then gave it a good drying out.....

Am not too bothered knowing if the boot is open or not - just want my boot light back........

Will post pics up soon - It just a black push connector bout 1.5cm long with 3 cables going into it ( live neutral and earth)
