Whats the difference between the Audi 50 and the MK1 polo???

Post by Poloracer »

Hi, this might seem a very stupid question but what is the difference between the Audi 50, and the Polo MK1, are they totaly different, or are they just the same. Ive seen mk1 polo's before, then one day saw what looked to me like a Mk1 polo, but with an audi badge on the front which looked ace, but ive seen more and more of them with audi badges on the front which makes me think theres an audi version of this car??? Whats the deal? I own a polo 9n3, 55 plate, but want somthing older to do an concours job on, was going to get a MK1 Golf, but everyone has done that, maybe might do a polo mk1/audi 50?? So if you can shine a bit more light on this matter, It would be most helpfull. Thanks, Poloracer

tis pretty much a rebadged audi 50 the mk1 polo. Early chrome bumper models for sure. The were never sold in the uk though, and the bits needed to change a mk1 to an audi 50 (badges and steering wheel) are very hard to come by so im told.

There seems to still be a few mk1s about, in fact there seem to be more of them than early mk2s at the moment.

I Dont see why you wouldnt be able to import an audi 50, but Im guessing they go for big money as even in europe theyre pretty rare. I think they were in production from 1974 till 1978, after that (probably due to number of sales) they just made the polo, so they wernt made for a terribly long time.

There are a few mk1 polos about prime for Audi 50age. theres a blue one for sale on club polo right now on an R plate, which would make it the right sort of age to qualify as a "proper" audi 50. If you get a 1980 or 1981 mk1, then VW made lots of changes to the car which makes them alot less audi and alot more VW, so id steer clear of those if you want to convince people its a '50

May be pointing out the obvious but all Audi 50s were LHD and had chrome bumpers, usually with higher specs than polos too.

Theres been a couple of good ones for sale recently, so if you have the cash, you can bag a nice one

Audi 50

The Audi 50 is in some parts different to the polo 1. Some of the guys just turned a polo MK 1 into the rare Audi 50 by replacing the symbols.

We can identify every chassis number from 1974 up to 1981. In the early days from 8,74 up to 7,76 you can identify ervery polo an audi by just checking the chassis numbers.

Sample:

865 15 001813

86 is Type 86
5 is Modellyear 1975 ( from 01.08.1974 up to 01.07.1975)
15 is always Audi 50 ( the Polo starts with 23)

001813 ist the normal running number for the year - in this case my Audi 50 GL produced 1 week of September 1974 and GL ( 1,1L 60PS) number 000331. Very early GL.

From 01.07.1976 the chassis numbers from Audi 50 and Polo 1 are the same. You have to take a look on the so called typenumber in your papers.

For any more informations just go to our side www.audi50.com. Page will be updated within the next 2 weeks for Techno Classia Fair in April in Essen and many changes. ( Servercrash aso....)

Best regards

Mike
