Lose gearstick in gear?

When mu car is in gear, the is alot of play in the gearstick, anything i can do to sort this?

Please don't say this is the start of gearbox trouble

I think its pretty normal to be honest. Mine is the same, there is considerable play (side to side) in the 'stick when in gear. Just one of those characteristics of the car! I'm sure some other GTi owners will agree with us

Anyone like to back up Si's comments?

Surely it wasn't like that when it rolled out the factory, it really makes me cringe when selecting gear...silly i know!

Do you think fitting a short-shifter would solve this?

Mine is loose once in gear, I started having problems selecting reverse these days though, and today after some spirited driving it didn't want to go into second on the first attempt.
