2 guys in casualty after trying to help me!

Post by macemc86 »

went to get the locking wheel nuts taken off of my wheels on saturday. The key broke last year and 2 of my tyres are getting a bit bald, need to change them ASAP.

Braught the car to a local tyre fitting company and they said no problem, we can get those off. 5 mins later one of the fellas returned from the garage with an air chisel in his hand, crouched down and went at it. Straight away he stopped. when i looked at him all the juice from inside his eyeball (sorry i dont know the technical term hehe ) was streaming down his face, then blood started squirting from out of his eye... ewwwwwww the muupet hadn't put his goggles on! Needless to say, he was then rushed to casualty straight away by the managers wife.

Along comes guy number 2. "i'll give it a bash" ! This guy puts his goggles on, starts chipping away. While he's doing this i then go to the cash point to get some money out for the guys. When i returned guy 2 had a little hole in his cheek from where more metal shot at him lol....

I think that garage needs to invest in some full face masks..

so 2 guys in casualty getting mended, 20 mins walk to a cash point, 1 hour sitting round at the garage and no joy! gutted....

I'm pretty suprised they tried to chisel it. Aren't later Polo's still on wheel studs as opposed to nuts? Wheel studs aren't hard to get off, given the right tools.

holy crap!!
glad i had my key thing with me when i went to the tyre place last time... had asked them, what if i lose this? reply: oh it's alright, we can get it off anyhow... I assumed they just had a large selection of locknut keys in a safe somewhere to keep the pikeys from taking them....

bah, need to get it off big time... will have to pop down to vw 2morow see if they can sort it out.

The garage did say they had a specialised bit of kit for the job, but it rarely successfully removed the lockers.

I had this with mine, the locking nuts were fooked by poxy air guns. Took it to my local garage and the tool the have is like a socket but with thread inside it. They start winding it onto the locking nut (anti-clockwise), as it locks up, it then undoes the locking nut, no chisels involved.

yup, braught it back to the same garage this weekend, just to see how the guy was, they told me they have got a new bit of kit, exactly what you said above...took 1 minute max, no drilling involved...easy as fook....

dont see why they didnt have this bit of kit around before? less work than the air chisel...I did notice a lot more health and safety eye protection posters up though hehe.

no i don't feel guilty. I asked for a service they said they could provide, and only their stupidity injured them. Both myself and my girlfriend were standing near by, he didnt warn us he was about to chisel, im just glad it wasn't myself or the mrs!

I asked the manager of the garage how the lads eye was, he is waiting on ANOTHER operation, he still has sight, but it will be blurred. Such a shame, all for the lack of something as simple as putting a pair of goggles on.
Going back there in a week or so to get another tyre done, will see if the guy is back at work yet or not.
