Bad news, gear box f****d up!
Just had a new gear box fitted at a cost of £420 including fit so not as expensive as i first thought. The gear box came off a similar 1.4 16V polo.
Heres the problem, i could get 115 out the car before but now the top speed is prob 102/103mph.
Even tried putting the old steel wheels back on to see if that makes a difference but no joy!
Any ideas? Is this due to new gearbox?

Is that top speed because that's when you hit the rev limit? Or because it hasnt got the juice to get past it?

Beofre the gearbox was fitted i could do 115mph without even redlining the car in 5th.
Now even when the car is redlining, its prob hitting between 102-104mph (approx) and it aint gna go any faster!
So how can i fix this problem?

has that gearbox come off the same model?, maybe due to having a smaller ratio box, with the gears closer together causing this. and not getting top end.

So the only solution would be to buy another new gearbox? This time making sure it comes from a 1.4 100bhp model?

Do you have the part number for the one put in? If you have, let me know it and ill let you know the engine code it goes with and then we will know for what size engine it is matched to.

yep, should be on a sticker stuck to the gearbox or might even be embossed on the metal

I admit its not great to lose speed and would def get it sorted but really is it much of a prob? when should you ever be doing 105 let alone 115?

wether or not he actually goes 105-115 anyway is not the point, he should have the right gearbox in.
what happens when he comes to sell it? people are going to expect a 1.4 16v 100bhp performance but really get 1.0 8v 50bhp performance.
Get another box mate!

I cant find the sticker, but it prob is a 1.0 litre gear box.
The performance is not affected. It can still keep up with 1.4 engine cars but its just the top speed affected.
