key cutting

Post by polokaj »

well i've only got one key for my polo, so i thought i'd get one cut from VW as a backup, went in and the lady said £40 for the key and then £75 labour to get it programmed + VAT ofcourse.
me being a student brought a slight shock to me so im just wondering if anyone knows somewhere that'll do it alot cheaper.

also what'd happen if i did loose the key would i ever be able to drive the car again without changing the whole ignition system.

Thanks

HI MATE GO TO A KEY CUTTING SHOP LIKE TIMPSONS AND THEY WILL DO IT FOR AROUND £20 BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO CHIP THE NEW KEY WITH A IMOBILLISER.

IV HAD MINE DONE

Depends on what type of chip is in the key. Mines on a 98 and they said it can't be done, only main dealer. Timpsons even put it in their machine and it wouldn't recognise it. Something about a rolling code chip?

VW have to send off for the code, then have a certain amount of time to program the key with it, otherwise they have to apply for it again. Some sort of security feature.

I still haven't got mine done yet, should really get it done though

Later model keys were different '98 onwards as pre '98 locks are easily bypasssed, they were laser cut so only VW dealers can supply the keys, i am not sure about the immobilisers on the later vehicles though.
