HELP
HI....
I was in nottingham earlier today and a problem occured with my 1043cc mk2 squareback. I ended up in the Radford area of Nottm, and unbeknown to me, my oil breather underneath carb was blocked and dumped oil in and around my carb. Causing it to splutter, cough and generally break down. My brother remembered his uni days last yr and recalled living nr a vw specialist so we limped there. They were very helpfull and sorted my problem to get me home. A big thankyou to u all involved. I managed to get home to Scun thorpe North Lincolnshire without any major hiccups, however even with breather disconnected its still spluttering a little. Going to get it sorted tomorrow. Are there any other major things i have to remember when i change the breather?
Thankyou
Nick

id been having problems with my breather sending black bits into the carb, and the oily fumes dont help running either
what i done on mine is taped off the pipe on the airfilter housing , then used some 20mm universal hose and a 90deg bend to run the breather down under the car, the hose sliped nicely into the rail where the fuel lines go somewhere down near the pedal area underneath
that way the carb breaths clean fresh filtered air.....and the oily skank can disperse under the car where you cant smell it

I think this crankcase ventilation system has gone and is blocked. So the pressure of the engine blows oily droplets into the air filter housing.
You can try it again if it's working, using the old air filter to be cautious, but I wouldn't have too much hope.
This crankcase ventilation hose is there mainly for environmental reasons.
Cleaing or replacing is difficult, I guess. I think it has to be pulled out from the rearside of the engine and it's a piece of metal that has to be hammered into.
I'm using an oil separator. That is mainly a piece of plastic that has the size of a Cola can and fits within the crankcase ventilation hose.

The first one I got from another Polo, newer model with bigger engine, from a scrap yard but this one broke internally after a few months.
Then I bought one from a VW dealer. Part # 052 103 495, 18 quid.
This is OK now since almost a year. The bloke from VW said the part would have 2 years warranty.

classic mk2 problem - the fix i've seen described for it need a new hose and a wire coathanger
take the old hose off, unbend the hanger and use it to scrape all the crud out of the pod (and beyond). put new hose on remembering to connect all the parts. bingo.
if you cant get the crap out, pour a little petrol in and churn it up, and commit yourself to an oil change before driving anywhere else.

Ok, bit of an update. Done 100 or so miles since sunday when i cleaned the breathers, airbox, carb, fuel filter and thoroughly checked the system. The spluttering and cutting out is starting again, when i start up the engine idles perfect, when i set if it either cuts out or struggles to move off. When i put foot down there isnt no power and the car kinda shakes and kangeroos, when i put it in 3rd and 4th the car runs a lil better. but still hardly any power. It cant be choking itself on oil coz the oil breather isnt connected to the airbox, i have put a coathanger down the pipe, took pipe off and cleaned it, blew through the pipe and its all clear, i have even put a canister thingy on. Whats worse is the oil seems to be coming out of the dipstick now. The car is a good lil runner, i have had it serviced and the timing is spot on. The fuelling is ok aswell, the filter is all clean and the pump is working, the coil is new, so is the dizzy cap and rotar arm and so are the leads, plugs and king lead. The earthing wires are all ok and when the problems dont happen the car is an excellent runner. The only thing i havent done is the rubber domed oil thingy under the inlet manifold coz i heard its abit of a nightmare. Whats the proper name and part number?
Seems to only happen after i clock up 100miles or so, im 80% sure its a breathing problem.
HELP

just to run through some more dumb double checks -
the carb and fuel filter are definately ok, yeah?
and have you a different set of leads / other ignition parts to check with?
that sort of thing i've seen as a fuelling and weak spark problem before (and encountered from time to time). is it the same story throughout the rev range, or is it better/worse at certain speeds, e.g. clearing up past 3000rpm (or as best as you can judge) or so?
