third gearbox gone
fricken sods law. Get the car back from the garage after they fixed the wiring loom and now the gearbox has gone. For the third time. After only 2400 miles of it being replaced. Less than two months ago

Harsh one mate. Should have no probs selling it at that price. My third box has just gone as well if its any consilation, i'm gonna rebuild it myself so i know all that can be done will be, and run on synthetic oil and PTFE and see how it lasts. If that one blows, in goes a lupo gti engine and 6speed 020 gearbox.
Are you absolute sure that the clutch was fully dissengaging?
By gear box 'gone' what do you mean exactly? Difficult to engage, impossible to engage? Missing gear? Big hole on the side of the engine with an "I've left you" note?
I would fiddle with the linkage before I give up on a box.
Mine wouldn't get 1 or 2 very easy when hot, so I figured out that the gate selector cable had probably stretched, since they do not shrink, so adjusted it by about 4mm.
Great can get 1 2 very easy, but not 5, so I put 2mm back and now its great.

Doesn't really matter how you drive the car, its going to go at some point. The main weakspot is the bearings on the diff/5th gear so it doesn't really matter if you drive it hard or not its generally more of a distance covered with a bit of random failing in between most make it past 50-60k but some unlucky people have seen them go at 30-40k.JWC wrote:Dudes, what the hell y'all doin with your gear boxes?
Take your time to change cogs - its not an F1 car, and they often don't make it 7- laps.
You are better to get the box re-built before it goes replacing the bearings etc and it shound then be good for at least another 50k. Its a shame as its such a excellent all round car to be let down by a pretty major fault. I've been in a 106 GTI that gets driven like it was stolen with 120k on the clock still with the original box and clutch. I've not heard of a GTI Polo making it past 80k on the original box !!
ye mine is being done.....im getting a box specially made for me as VW cant get hold of one!!! so hopefully it will last a bit longer and be better quality, also need a new manifold and sump as my 4branch doesnt fit properly and has been banging against my sump.....so i have a massive bill and means i have to wait till febuary to get my TH lines!!!!
