Problem solved!
I tracked it down to the switch which is located behind the boot lock. It looks like my washer unit used to leak and therefore had caused the switch to erode and malfunction.
Its really simple to replace, just prise the old one out and insert the new one in its place. You don't have to remove the inside tailgate panel but it makes it easier.
The new switch cost me £10.23 in total.
