Newby MK 111 Polo Coolent or Water Leak.

Post by john6177 »

Hiya All,

I am new to this site and my current daily ride is a 1991 MK 111 Polo, 1.1.
I have a problem with my coolent level as i am forever topping it up, is it leaking, as i am not sure, their is evidence that it may be leaking at the front of the engine as its wet, but am not sure where my coolent is going. :D

could be a leak somewhere, check the thermostat housing as theres a small gasket in there and they sometimes go, mine did.

also check for mayo kinda substance under the filler cap, if theres lots it means water/ anti freeze is mixing with oil.

If you park it on a big piece of cardboard, you can see where any drips land, which might help you trace where it's coming from. If it doesn't drip when parked, run the engine for a bit as some leaks only show up under pressure.

If it's right at the front ot the engine bay, then you probably have a hole in the radiator. That's usually caused by stone damage, or corrosion near the bottom.

If it doesn't drip at all, then it could point to an internal gasket failure.
