trip meter problem

Hi

My 98 1.4cl Polo has just developed a fault, when i press the trip meter button nothing happens, now the service indicator has come on the speedo and of course i cant reset it as the trip meter button doesnt work.

any ideas how this can be solved, i really hope it does not need a new speedo unit
