GTI Pros & Cons...

Post by mfa-polo »

Im not new to this site having had a few Polos (1.4TDI 9N, GTI 6N2, 1.9 TDI 9N) I currently have a Golf MK5 GTI, and prior to that a MK5 GT TDI, I'm seriously considering getting a new Polo GTI, so what are the pros and cons?

Well in my opinion only......

Pros-

Great build quality, great seats, a lot lighter than the golf, quite cheap to insure for what it is, very tunable...can easily make 240bhp with about £1500 worth of engine work....and the engine can cope with this power very well (when other chassis componants are changed eg breaks, suspension)

Cons-

Crap breaks as standard and does not handle very well also when standard. Although not a small car....maybe not as praticle for you if you have family and kids.

This is just my opinion on a few things.....but if tuned right these things have the potential to be animals!!! They can put to shame a lot of cars which they....well....shouldent

Get one! You will not regret it!

i had a golf v gti and hated it, i missed all the funa and raw aggressive feeling i had with my first mk7 polo gti

i traded the golf back in after 3 weeks and got my gti i have now brand new, now mines a fairly tuned up example engine and chassis wise, nothings really been untouched, and it goes like a trooper and handles stunningly well

as for pro's
i would say they are built well, with a bullet proof engine and are rare on the roads, which for me makes them attractive, they are fairly well equipped as standard with features, and are good on fuel and insurance, mines stage 2 running 230 ish bhp with 277 ft/lb torque and i can easilly get back 38 to the gallon if im being sensible
the best pro for me is seeing the look on peoples faces in their quick cars that a polo shouldnot be able to entertain panic as you leave them for dead, mine can do 60 in sub 6 seconds if i get the traction right

cons,
need spec'ing up, ill get slated for saying this, but i dont like the cloth seats, mine were factory leather and were still not very good quality, so iv had mine custom retrimmed to suit my wants and needs, other nicer features are also options such as climate control with the screen, not knobs, heater seats, sunroof etc and all cost more, all of which i opted for, so i have a great spec'd up example
the only real con for me is handling out of the box is not exciting, coilovers or at least a drop is needed, but i planned to do this anyway, so it never put me off

Hi Lads,

ive just been browsing and found this forum, thought i was a rare breed buying this car, glad to see there are other who love this car!

I read your pros and cons and before i read them i was hoping someone else would mention the brakes, i see you have and so i know now its not just me. id describe them as 'wooden' or lifeless they seem to be either on, or off theres no in between.
I would also say another con is the body roll and finally (but this may just be my car) the steering resistance is quite inconsistent, sometimes it weights up nicely at speed, but other times ill be doing 70 on the motorway and it feels very light.

Pros.... the looks are amazing, beauty mixed with total subtlety, mine is candy white and when its waxed up it looks amazing. The wheels are so unique too.
The quality is amazing, every fiesta and corsa of my friends i get into, i just think, these are 2 different leagues, the dashboard feels like its straight out of a tiger tank and there are no nasty rattles or squeaks.
Performance is sexual, the wrench of the acceleration when you floor it and the turbo kicks in, i love it. whether i cain it or just poodle about in it, its brilliant.

Sorry about that been bottling all that up....

Ive been thinking about refining the handling a little, what do you guys know about the eibahc anti roll bar ou can get for it?
