Hi, I wonder if anyone has any experience of this problem I'm having with my 2006 1.4 FSI Sport? On occasion the starter motor simply does not engage and all I get is a clicking sound coming from under the bonnet. Now, in days go past I would have said this was a faulty solenoid switch but truth be told I don't even know if the modern electronics of this car actually incorporate a solenoid or not! The car has done just 7000 miles and I've actually discovered it was a problem for the previous owner .... I've had the car just two weeks and it's now back at the dealers. They say they can find nothing wrong (sods law), but the problem IS completely sporadic. It happened the other day and refused to turn over for an hour - then I came back to it and it started straight away. It turns out a new starter motor was fitted last year and also a new battery ..... it sounds to be like a loose contact somewhere or maybe a problem with the ignition switch. BTW, it does the same thing with both keys!
I've refused to take the car back until the problem is solved, a bit of a problem 'cause I bought it in Cumbria and live in North Yorkshire!! I'd be really grateful if anyone else has heard of 9n Polos suffering this problem
Cheers

Re: Mystery Ignition Problem
i live near skipton, i work for the AA sounds like a faulty earth or loose connection, poss stater solenoid fault but needs a good check over! If its so intermittent it points more to the starter soleniod i bet if you hit it while it was clicking it would fire up many i go out to do!

Re: Mystery Ignition Problem
Thanks very much for that m8, I sort of thought that must be the problem too - I didn't know whether there was a seperate solenoid or it was part of the starter motor. In any event, I convinced the dealer that this must be the problem and they're fitting a new one (solenoid - not starter) and I pick it up tomorrow. I have to go up to Grange Over Sands to collect the bloody thing (serves me right for not buying local). I'll let you know what they say.
By the way, is this a common problem on 9n polos?
