Newbie! - with plenty of questions

Post by nigelelliott394 »

Hi there!

I'm a bit of a newbie to the whole Polo scene and just wanted to introduce myself as I've been lurking about for a month or two on these forums now and decided it was time to make myself known.

I bought my Polo not too long ago and have some plans in store, nothing over the top or anything. It's a 1.9D E (yep, as basic as... something basic) and had 109,000 miles on it when i bought it... i know, that's a bit high, but I reckon i could get it to reach 150,000 with regular servicing.

I'm hoping to make it look like a GTI and bring the spec level up a bit by adding central locking and electric windows (i have some questions about that).

Anyway, here's a pic... I look forward to chatting to you all :)

Its not a TDI so a remap wont make alot of difference. 10BHP gain if your lucky

Its the Polo 9N with the 1.9TDI engine, thats the Polo GT

Thanks everyone!

It's much nippier than my last car. I used to have a diesel 206 with a stretched throttle cable and no brake servo... death trap! I've come to terms with the fact that no matter what I try to do to make the car faster, I probably won't gain much in terms of power. I'm happy enough just making it look nice for the mean time though :)

Ok, so I have a lot of questions... so many that I was feeling a bit unsure about starting a new thread for every single one of them so I'm gonna go ahead and ask away in this one.

As I've mentioned I'm going for the GTI look... I know, it's been done before but I really like the look and most of my questions will be about achieving that look. Ok, So...

The Spoiler - Is it possible to fit the GTI spoiler? I'm a bit unsure of how you attach it to the tailgate or do you need a completely new tailgate and where does the 3rd brake light go?

The Side Skirts - I've seen these side skirts on polos that aren't GTI's... am i able to get myself a set from the dealer/scrappy and put them on? or would i be right in saying i may need to get a very similar looking aftermarket set?

Colour Coding - Is it best to have a go at this myself or to take it to a body shop? I'm a bit unsure of how to tackle the bump strips really without making a hash of the rest of the car.

Electric Windows - When i was looking amongst the plethora of central locking kits I came across a universal electric window kit... with my Polo being the 'E' trim level, i took a keen interest in this. Would it be possible to fit this, buy a set of door cards from an 'SE' model and wire the kit to the switches in the door cards?

Only 4 questions for now... look forward to the replies :)

Best have a look at some of my old threads matey - I did exactly this to my old polo and it was damned costly, but it looked awesome :)

The GTI spoiler can be fitted - it does require drilling the tailgate to get the mount screws in, and requires removing the current third brake light to get the wiring for the spoiler through.

The side skirts cannot be added - its part of the chassis of the 16V polos. Votex (VWs accessory branch) did at one point make an add on sent, but they are rarer than diamonds so you may have to give up on that part.

Colour coding - best buy a whole new set of the 'primered' rub strips from a dealer or euro etc then get them all painted by a body shop. The texture on the currents is a pain to remove.

Electric windows - These can be added - its better to get genuine motors from a similar polo, and do it properly, as these universal kits are pretty pants, and often can cause damage to the inside of the door - not to mention about 10 holes to mount the motors inside.

Thanks for the help Alex :) Do you have any pics of the car you made look like the GTI? Some of them could be helpful!

I'll do some more searching through the threads :)
