Ok, I've hit the 100,000 mile mark (doh) and the box is still going. The whine hasn't got any worse since my last post so you never know it might have a bit more life in it yet :D

Mine has just gonbe over the 60,000 mark and is still on the original box. Seem's fine, no signs so far of any problems.

A little stiff from cold but thats very common anyway so nothing to complain about.

I hear some people had to replace thier boxes at 30-40K, even less in some cases. I can only assume they took more of a battering than others

On my first GTi I had the gearbox done at 86k but it was still going strong with over 180k on the clock before some lass rear-ended me in the snow earlier this year...i then brought an Alfa which I kept for about 3 months, nice enough car 'n all but I really missed my GTi so I got rid and got another GTi...

Well Im on 76k and Ive started to get a really bad whining noise. Its quite a deep sound that slowly gets faster as I go faster, but is the same sound regardless of what gear Im in etc, its purely speed related. Also if I put the clutch in or roll in Neutral the sound is still the same. If I wasnt so worried about the box I would say its a wheel bearing or CV joint.

Got the car up on ramps and looked under and there is oil that has leaked around the joint of the gearbox. The CV joints are fine (no splits in boot or anthing look to have been recently replaced) and Im yet to check the wheel bearings. Ive only had the car about 3 weeks and there was no noise whatsoever from the box when I got it and I drove 400miles back home without any troubles. Ive done about 1000 miles is that enough for the box to go from silent to really noisy?

It still changes fine, first is a little stubborn but Ive heard this is common on these and Lupo GTI's. Apart from the noise I absolutely love it and is a nice change from a Bora! Its just I want to get on with a few other mods but if my box is going then I need to sort that first.

Im thinking of changing the gearbox oil to see if it helps and obviously still need to check the wheel bearings can anyone suggest anything else or advice. The car is pretty much standard apart from little bits like black badges and a stubby aerial so nothing engine wise - well its got a BMC panel filter and Ive fitted a cold air feed to the airbox as the existing design is rubbish but it was doing it before this anway. Its had 4 previous owners so I wouldnt have said its something someone has had a lot of problems with before and it also has FSH. It had the pedal box under warranty but not 100% on whether the box has ever been done.

Like I say it was totally fine when I bought it Im surprised if a box can go that quickly but Im new to the world of GTI's...

Thanks

Tom
