Guys,
I have had a problem with my polo cutting out. I've read about "erratic revs" but there seems to be no real solution.
Basically every time i pit the clutch down in either 1st or second gear, the revs drop to around 500 on a good day but most of the time it cuts out and stalls. I thought it maybe the head gasket cos i found residue in the water and my levels were dropping quickly but i had a service and they said it wasn't. The spark plugs and the filters have been changed, but I do need a new alternator belt, would this effect it?
its a 1999 1.0
3 door
Btw i cant find where i can buy an alternator belt anywhere!!

Re: A couple of problems with my 6n
its most likely your throttle body , people who i know aswell as myself have had tat problem, soon each time you put your clutch down itll cut out completly, tbh if you rthikin on keepin ya car for a long time get a brnad new one their around 300 but worth it scene as you should get warantee ont part so s'all good
Re: A couple of problems with my 6n
well i had this problem and just cleaned it out with crap cleaner works fine now only prob i found is that if u take the throttle body off the car u need to get it set up again using something like vagcom
Re: A couple of problems with my 6n
ok. so is it most likely to be the throttle body? people have said it could be oxygen sensor, ht leads, dirty fuel system, cracks in leads etc etc. seems like there could be a number of things. i obviously waan keep the spending down to the minimum so is there anything i can do, like general clean which isnt too hard?
Re: A couple of problems with my 6n
mainly when it happens due to slowing down and dipping the clutch, it is the TB. However, it can also be other components you've just mentioned. The most expensive out of the culprits would be the Idle Control Valve, which controls the right amount of air in relation to gas. When it gets mixed signals it would provide too much or too little, showing signs when you dip the clutch because its on idle.
I've also noticed the issue gets worse when you get the car serviced when you'de imagine the car to feel better!!!

Re: A couple of problems with my 6n
I had this same problem. All it cost to solve was a trip to halfords and a can of carb cleaner for £5.00. Simply spray this down the throttle body and give the car a few revs and problem solved. Car has been fine for a year since doing it. Took 10 mins
Re: A couple of problems with my 6n
^^ As above 80% of the time the issue. Usually the TB needs a clean or just alignment. I'd advise to take it off and spray it, not nice for all the crap t go through your engine.
I wasn't so lucky though, i've had my valver 2.5 years and never solved the issue after spending sp much money. The problem just went away and very occasionally show sign again during the colder seasons.

Re: A couple of problems with my 6n
Thanks for all the responses. i just sprayed the TB with carburetor cleaner and went out for a quick spin and the revs didnt drop anything. ill keep close eye over the next few days.
when i took the air filter housing off i noticed a hose next to the throttle body and loads of mayonaise inside it... which is never a good sign! could this have something to do with it?
