Re: W8 Interior Light

Was using this guide to install my w8 light

http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/221935.aspx

but it says:

New wire to pin 1 on w8 plug
Blue-white to pin 3 on w8 plug
Brown to pin 4 on w8 plug
Blue-red to pin 5 on w8 plug

When i took out my existing light i have on the original plug: brown + black in pin 1, red and black in pin 2 and brown in pin 3

So im guessing the brown wire will still go to pin 4 on the w8 plug but what pins do the brown+black and red+black go to??

And also do you just connect the new wire to your sidelights? And could anyone tell me what colour this wire is on the dial that switches your lights on?

Thanks

I used an adaptor, but I would assume that the wiring is the same, just with different colour coding as the guide is for a golf.
Assuming brown is the same for both, brown/black is the same as blue/white and red/black is the same as blue/red. I haven't actually tried this, but given the plug is the same it seems reasonable.
Yeah, new wire to sidelights (or numberplate lights etc). I think I used pin 13, will try and take a look tomorrow to confirm this.

did your light have the blue+white and the blue+red??

also i tried test fitting it last night it is a tight fit but because of those metal spring clip things (dunno what else to call them) it keeps sliding back out as there is a piece of white plastic glued to the inside of the headlining. Did you have this in yours also?

No, my wiring looks the same as yours.
It needs the spring things against the white plastic to keep it in. I tried to force it and ended up pulling the plastic ring completely out by accident lol. Its because if you look at the side of the light where the plug goes in, directly underneath the plug socket there is a thin bit of plastic that looks like a support for the socket itself. Its this that is catching on the plastic, along with a similar plastic piece which looks like it is to hold the light steady or something about half way across . It needs a bit of plastic surgery :D with a stanley knife to cut this down, and it fits easier. I had the plastic ring on the bench, so I test fitted it repeatedly till it fitted snugly, and then glued the ring back into the headlining with superglue.
I found it easier to mount it with the bulb bit closer to the windscreen, so the buttons are closer to you. Incidentally, it looks better when fitted this way.

i might try and take the plastic ring out then as it might be easier to get a look at how it fits

Managed to get it to fit after some modifications with a stanley knife. Now just need to wire it all up, gonna order a couple of parts so i can make a plug and play adapter so im not messing with the original wiring. So pictures fully fitted beginning of next week hopefully :)

Can anybody confirm that the sidelights are on pin 13 on the plug for the sidelights/headlights switch dial??

Cheers

Just checked, mine is wired to pin 13 of the headlight switch, its a grey/black wire to one of the sidelights. Been in about a month and works fine.

This is gonna sound a bit daft, but could someone give me the dimensions of the light? I had a play around with mine and it is seperate to the motion sensors, but it looks a different shape to the W8...

Thanks,
Ash :)

The visible bit is about 158mm by 77mm. The actual hole in the headlining is slightly smaller than this as it isn't a regular shape. I can't really remember the dimensions, but I reckon maybe about 1-2mm off other side sounds about right. Don't quote me on that though lol.
