Got the car up on ramps today and took a look at what I could do. It turned out that all I needed to get access was to unscrew the front passenger side plastic wheel arch trim at the front of the arch (not even take it off) and peel it back slightly. This gave me perfect access to the washer pump. Clipped the hose back on and put a cable tie around it. Jobs a good'un. Just thought I'd share for the benefit of anyone with a similar problem.
Rear washer hose fixing tip
Rear washer hose fixing tip
My rear washer stopped working over the recent cold snap, and to my frustration, I found the hose had popped off right at the pump (just behind the bumper) making it impossible to get to. Everything I'd read suggested that the front bumper needed taking off, which would be a PITA.

Re: Rear washer hose fixing tip
Personally I'd rather just to add enough washer fluid addative for winter use and avoid these pipes being forced off by the fluid sludging/freezing in the pipes. What do you thing will fail when this system freezes up the next time - hint, pump? Now that will cost a bit more than using a higher concentration of washer fluid! I'd reckon that that VAG design "weaknesss" has saved quite a lot pumps from failing.
Re: Rear washer hose fixing tip
I think it's fair to say some of the temperatures this winter have taken us all a bit by surprise. I've got a winter concentration of additive in the washer at the moment and have done since November, but this obviously wasn't enough to give protection down to -10C and below. I guess it just makes you a bit more mindful of general maintenance at this time of year!

I use some Volvo stuff me bro gets that done a brillent job through the cold times did not freeze/ sludge once
Re: Rear washer hose fixing tip
What kinda concentration are you using?
Re: Rear washer hose fixing tip

I have posted the answer to this several times. an inherant vw group fault and one they still havent fixed even on the new polo as well. best to use petrol hose clipsand tighten them up this will stop the hose popping off and soaking every where. do the same for the pipe connection over the left handside wheel arch two clips required here.
Regards the screen wash I use coma and have never had any sludging and thats me putting it in full strength during the last couple of months during the summer I just use water.
I probably wouldnt put any form of clip or cable tie at the water pump as it is designed this way to pop off or blow so that the pump doesn't get damaged during the cold periods when the fluids freeze thus expanding in size and forcing the pipe of. As you have found out it is a two minute job now you know how to get at the water pump.
