Gear crunch blahhh :/

Post by Josh_6n2_Polo »

Hello All, I was just wondering if there is a solution to the occasional gear crunches that I seem to get from time-to-time especially when putting it into reverse. Any suggestions or is it just something us Polo drivers have to live with!

Thanks.

Try having the gearbox oil changed and the linkage realigned.. but it may be the pressure plate is badly worn and the clutch will need replacing (i'm speaking from experience on a 6N2)

Start the engine with the clutch down, then select gear. Or if running, depress clutch and wait 10 seconds before engaging gear.

I know this actually work cos mine has got the same problem ... but does anyone know what the actual problem is with all these polos crunching gears in reverse? and is it repairable or the only solution is a gearbox rebuild?

they crunch in reverse because they dont have a syncromesh, you need to engage the clutch wait 3-4secs then engage the gear

in the simple way it was put for me
not sure if its the perfect way to explain it and its probably not exactly right but it was just a simple way to make me understand lol
so dont get all mechanical on me!!

when u turn your car on and its idling its ready to go into gear.
cogs start turning ready for u expecting to go into a forward gear.
obviously reverse goes in the opposite direction from the other gears.
so when when u put it into reverse the cog turning one way clashes with the clog spinning the other way for forward gears.
by waiting a few seconds before putting it into reverse the cogs have time to slow down, meaning the clash isnt as hard and the loud crunching sound isnt made.

I think that's almost bang on the money mate - that's the job of the synchromesh to slow the gears down to match the speed of the selector by friction.

More info here:

I think the guys are right, this is just 'design' in the Polo (bad design IMHO)
