GTi Front brakes

sorry if this has been covered before but i`m new to this so pls bear with me.
Took my polo in for its 30k service a couple of weeks back and they informed me that i need new front discs & pads and new rear pads, and offered to relieve me of £230 for the fronts and £85 for the rear pads (all fitted). I politely declined, as you do, figuring i can sort them out myself for a couple of quid less. So i went to German & Swedish and after some looking and measuring the guy there informed me that they didn`t have anything for me and advised sticking with vw. has anybody else had this problem? and can anyone recommend some good alternatives to std vdub discs.

I had new front discs fitted and new pads all round on my GTi a couple of months ago. A few hours after i left the car with the VW dealer they called me to let me know the car would be delayed untill the next day because they hadn't realised that the Polo GTi front discs were unique to the Polo GTi........ They were having to order them in for delivery and fitting the next morning, so i got the glorious pleasure of a tidgy basic Lupo for another few hours

This could well tie in with what the guy you spoke to was on about. Cost me around 280 quid-ish for the lot though i'm sure.

They are correct. The GTI has 256x25 mm brake discs, whereas the normal cars have 20 mm thick discs. There's perhaps not enough demand for an aftermarket company to manufacture this size, allthough you could try Brembo or Zimmermann to be sure. In any case, you won't be off much cheaper going that route.

Well, when I bought my VW GTI the pads were already worn so I asked the VW Dealer to replace them when I bought it as part of the conditions of sale. Only thing is, they then started squeeking 1 week later on the first left wheel so I had to take it back in. They cleaned up the brakes they said and FILED A CORNER OFF ON OF THE SQUEEKING PADS! What?!?! Well, it still squeeks occasionally as I think the pads are sticking in the caliper so obviously thye didn't clean them that well! So, I would suggest buying the pads from VW Parts and doing it yourself. What's the old moto, "If you want something doing right, do it yourself". This applies here.

true bout doing it yourself but thing is with brakes im never too sure!

I've been looking for some uprated discs for ages now, and can't find any
My brakes have squeaked and rubbed for as long as I've had the car, had them checked and cleaned by VW several times, even had new calipers fitted on the rear, and they squeak the worst!

Drives me mad in the summer with the windows open

My discs front and rear have quite a lip on them and I will be replacing them all with std discs and pagid fast road pads soon, hopefully this will sort them out!

looks like i`m gonna have to bite the bullet, or at least the vw parts man and buy the standard stuff after all. i suppose i`ve had the car 3 yrs and the stds have worked ok so far, i haven`t piled into a wall or a volvo...
