Right so a little problem has been manifesting itself recently. When starting from cold she turns herself off immediately after starting and then today was intermittently kangarooing at lows revs and not responding to small throttle inputs at constant speed.

Will clean the TB tonight although i did this last august and it has covered maybe 1000 miles since then? along with the plugs.

Anyone experienced this before?

Re: Joe's 3rd Gti Progress Thread- Jumpy throttle?

Not had the exact same symptoms but my old GTi used to run a little lumpy if there had been a bad frost/snow and did sometimes kangaroo at low revs.

I didn’t really bother me at the time because it only happened after heavy snow or a really bad frost but I thought it was due to moisture on the ignition leads.

Checking the Throttle body as you mentioned would be a good idea and maybe check the plugs & leads too

Joe's 3rd Gti Progress Thread- Jumpy throttle?

Post by nigelelliott394 »

I'm having the same problem Joe. Cleaned my throttle body a few days ago and it hasn't resolved the problem for me. It does seem to accelerate smoother (sometimes) but between 2 - 3k revs it'll kangaroo unless Ive applied full throttle... And even the slightest tap of the accelerator and the car lurches forward. Similarly, if you're driving at a constant speed and you release the pressure on the throttle slightly it's like you've dabbed the brakes or something.

This sound familiar?

I get this too!

VAGCOM is reporting that the immobiliser is stopping the engine start intermittently. It miss-fires sometimes when the engine is cold, but if I put it into neutral and floor it for a second it returns to normal again! :?

As for the lurching back/forth - I'm wondering if an engine mount has gone on mine as it's very jerky and quick shift 1st-2nd can induce a loud banging noise as well as lifting off the throttle. :?

I've put a new coil onto mine and it's still doing it. I think the leads and plugs are less than 15k old too. Might try a TBA in VAGCOM, see if that improves it? It's not really a problem as it's only when it's cold fortunately. Will coat the whole area in WD40, see if that makes a difference.

The vagcom error you get- ignore it occurs to across the vag range to all the cars i've vagcomm'd.

But yes Nigel, similar circumstances to you, it's fine once the engine has warmed. Im thinking Exhaust EGR valve although i assume this would throw a vagcom error.

Will go for a drive tomorrow with the engine channels open so i can see throttle percentages etc etc and see if i get any clues from that .

Had a thought, i've been a cheap skate and have been running 95 ron recently...

But more so possible corrosion around the DIS module/ coilpack distributor?

Interested to see the results Joe. I've been running on 95 for ages now... I can't justify paying for BP Ultimate with petrol prices being so dear but that COULD be it? I'm kind of hoping it's a coilpack issue though. Seems easiest fixed.

Hmmmm I sometimes get this as well Joe. But usually after a really damp spell like we have had recently. Im thinking of replacing the DIS module soon anyway so i'll see if that makes a big differance. Im also running rubbish Denso plugs so need to change them for NGK's.

I have been running mine on 95 as well. V-power is just too expensive! but i do notice that it runs like a dog if I have to fill up on supermarket mineral water

Hmmm didn't do it driving home from work earlier, seems to be when there' a lot of moisture in the air.
