what can a 16v take on?

Post by david burton »

come on then - what do you reckon a 16v motor can take on?

lets say with an uprated filter, otherwise standard.

I'd be willing to pop a punch at a VTR.... I reckon most of these boys don't know that the polo had a 16v engined variant - judging by the looks at max power I'd say very few people realise it'll take on a VTR and probably beat it.

stories please!

Just need to look the the bhp/weight.

In reality it would beats things like, novas, vtr's, corsa 1.4 16v's....All the lower spec hot hatch's.

Im about equal to a 106 gti or vts atm and that with just getting the breathing sorted.

i like to think we can beat anything!!! cos we rock!

erm...but in reality i know the old vtr is doomed and im going to test the newer one very soon......

the other day i had a go against a 1.8t passat from the lights on a national speed dual carriage way, the polo did an awesome job and there was nothing in it til about 70 where the passat only just started pulling clear. top gear magazine put the 1.8t at 9.2 seconds to 60 (150bhp engine). i cant comment on the skill of the other driver but we'd been playing for at least a mile before we got a clear drag, so he was playing, maybe his car was ill or maybe we rock!!!

Criz - what mods you got? Anything you recommend to get my motor up to scratch?

BTW - do you find the 16v holds it's revs when changing gear? mine seems to refuse to drop the revs at all until about a second after you lift off the accelerator?!

it's only in 1st and 2nd i notice it - the revs just seem to hang if I change about 3000rpm.

i havent noticed to be honest or i cant remember, one or the other, i'll check tommorow. i hope they wont, ive always been abit worried about the bad comments about how the engine can have uneven idle or even rev on its own at lights. mines got a habit of been totally fine, then sometimes at lights u can hear/feel a fluctuation in the revs, like about 3 fluctations a second if that makes sense, a little touch of the gas sorts it out tho. i always think this is a sign of bad things to come. have u had this?

yeah, it kept revving too high at lights (not me), but corrected itself about two months ago?!

it just seems to like holding it's revs.

if it revs too high at the lights - i turn the fans on full. this loads the car and the revs drop!

don't worry about bad things to come - it's just sensitive ;)

Yeh I get that, also my revs fluctuate sometimes at idle.

I got a bmc filter with cold ram air feed, supersprint 421 manifold, full s/s exhaust and decat.

welcome kitt good to see another valver owner on line

i checked the rev thing at 3k and it doesnt happen in my car....yet! wot mileage r u on? mines knockin on the door of 47k. the flux in revs isnt that severe ive never had to turn on the fans at lights (although i love the idea how did u find that one out?) its just more u can see the needle quiver a tiny bit off its 900 idle and u can feel the extra vibes through the wheel. im just getting paranoid i think, i like a car with character!
fingers crossed it wont get worse

Mine's done just over 10k miles. Brought it last October from an old lady who kept it garaged, and only did 1200 miles in it in 4 years!!

Here's a pic:
Image

So far it's been great although I have to say the seat's aren't the most comfortable I've ever had in a car and specifiing a passenger airbag instead of a glovebox is a tad annoying. Other that that it's a great little car :D

sorry for the thread hijack!

1200 Miles in 4 years...

300 Miles a year...

25 Miles a month...

I do that in like 2 days! Lol, probably 1 sometimes.

Now thats a bargain, very cool, looks good 2.

I may only have a 1.0 BUT if I change gear at around 4000 each time I can keep up with s**t loads of things on dual carrageways. Followed a BMW the other day, I mean yeh he wasn't exactly trying to go fast, and I was racing it but still.

Funny when I over take a Modded Nova ha, so comical.
