MKV AHW engine to a AVY GTi

Post by willjmhannis »

Hi guys im new to the forum and just about to take on an engine swap as i have brought a mark 5 polo with the 1.4 16v engine siezed. Apparently the sump plug dropped out and subsiquently the engine was run dry causing catastrophic damage. I struggled to get hold of a replacement engine at a resonable price but did find a mark 5 1.6 gti engine code AVY. Through some of the reseach i have already done i am under the impression that this is a fairly simple swap but just wondering if anyone can give me some very much appriciated advice on problems i might encounter?

Im intending to use the 1.4 gear box as its the only one i have, i know my ratios will become shorter but im ok with that. Im assuming i will have to replace the ecu for the 1.6 seimens one but my main question was regarding the loom and keys? will i also need a different loom or is it a plug in and play situation? and will i have a problem with the key coding with the new engine?

Many thanks for any help

Not really as simple as that

Using a 1.4 gearbox on a 1.6 isnt advisable, and may not even work

The GTI uses a 200mm clutch plate, and the 1.4 16V a 175 or 190mm plate depending on which engine code it was. The GTI gearbox is also very different as it uses EDL which the standard gearboxes dont have

The GTI loom is also very different as it uses a different management system to the 1.4 in many ways. Theres alot more sensor and plugs!

If you were to swap, youd have to do full engine and loom.

Not to mention youd have to declare it to the DVLA and insurance else all would be void....

Ah fair enough that's a bad idea then. Lol. Any idea of a cheaper engine that will fit? I'd prefer the original AHW engine although they seem to be very expensive. Does anyone know if the 1.4 8valve engine code AUD (or any other)for the same year polo will fit with minimal changes to the loom, preferably just an ecu swap.

My guesses are that it will had to be the AHW engine, knowone knows we're I might find a cheap one? I've checked all local breakers yards, Internet breakers, eBay, gumtree etc. just need a half decent engine tower minus all the auxiliaries..?

You really need to use another 1.4 16V engine

The 8V engine is very different by design and loom.
