Which Alloys?

Hi everyone,

As im your typical girl i dont know too much about cars. However, ive got a 2000 Polo (facelift model) with 13" wheels which i think should actually be 14, but thats what it came with. Anyway, i want to put bigger wheels on, what size can i go upto? would 16" be too big? Hope someone can help! Thanks guys

Yours is actually a mk v, so ive moved your post.

Depending on the engine it would have 13 or 14. 1.0 and 1.4 8Vs have 13s, where as 16vs have 14s

Anyway - the below tyre combinations will fit

15s with a 195/45/15
16s with a 195/40/16

I found some of that description. I also found some others that I like but they are 195/50/15.. Would these be too big? Thanks again!

195/50 are suitable however they put the speedo out by about 2mpg so at 68 your actually doing 70

Also if you are lowered they can scrub on the arches but anything down to about 40mm is fine

Hi there,

hopefully it is ok to ask a similar question on this existing thread...

Currently looking for alloys for my 6N2...my stock tyres are 175/65/13 and I am hoping to find alloys I can slot onto that tyre size ie. not having to amend anything or lower the car etc. I've seen second hand alloys which are on 175/70/13 tyres - would these fit the tyres I have or would I need to do additional work?

Am I able to buy 13 inch alloys with a 4 pin to fit any 13 inch tyre size?

Youll be lucky to find alloys thatll take a 175/65/13

Your better to look at 14 or 15 inch alloys - the steel wheel tyres look like ballons on smaller wheels.

Thanks for your reply alex, does that mean the ones ive seen for 175/70/13 wont fit on my tyres?

Also I only wanted some cheap alloys to replace my hubcaps - didnt want to lower my car or have to buy..coilovers etc?

No they will fit no problem.

You don't have to lower your car to have alloys - they look ok with alloys on standard suspension.

Thanks for your reply - im still a bit worried that ill end up buying alloys that wont fit my wheels. Ive been told that its the R13 section that obviously makes all the difference, however why would alloys on 175/70/13 fit 175/65/13 tyres? wouldnt they be loose/too tight to put on or do i need to buy something to keep them in place etc?

sorry for all the questions, looking at buying some second hand alloys from ebay so dont want to be lumbered witrh ones that dont fit, for example something like these...

The 175 is also important as that states the width of the tyre. These will be fine of as you say they take a 175 tyre. Te 65 and 70 just states the profile or in laymens terms height of the tyre the profile is stated in a percentage of the tyre width as long as the 175 is the se it will 100% be fine but others "could fit" also. I don't want to confuse you anymore. Aha. 175 and 13 is important the middle number not so much. Unless you're low and worried about body clearance.

Middle number is important though as this affects the rolling radius and will throw the speedo

175/70/13 is fine on your car, and you can fit a 175/65/13 to those alloys no problem - the alloys are 13 inches, so the tyres will fit either way

You must also make sure they are 4x100 and the PCD is 57.1 else they wont fit snug to the hub

Basically I dont want to go up to a tyre size due to alloys which will affect my speedometer / fuel consumption really!

What do you think is the highest I could go to without affecting the speedometer? 14s with specific profile or so?

With the correct tyres, your speedo will not be affected

If it is affected, its so small you wont even notice providing your only one size up or down from the stock tyres

The below sizes on the left are standard fit. The sizes to the right are alternatives.

175/65/13 or 175/70/13
185/55/14 or 185/60/14
195/45/15 or 195/50/15
195/40/16
