stage one ecs 5 speed clutch

Post by Gtimatt »

just got my polo back from having this fitted. the gearbox bell housing had to be adjusted so this would fit. but oh my god what a difference it has made.
I was so used to the old clutch slipping and having to drive carefully now all the power can be transferred much better. its almost brutal changing gear.
and i would recommend this clutch to anyone with a stage one remap

Got the same on mine when the clutch started slipping, it does make a big difference!

I went for the standard 14lb flywheel, its a little rattley in neutral but goes when you put clutch in or its in gear

You go for the heavyer one or same?

Bit of a necropost but hey ho, anyone else fitted one of these and what is your experience of it? I'm looking to replace my clutch and flywheel but I'm not sure whether to go for the lightweight flywheel or the heavier one. I think I could put up with a little chatter but nothing too excessive.. I presume the heavier of the two flywheels is still a lot lighter than the stock one? Or are they not that different??

Also it appears I'm at the upper limit of the stage one kit power and torque wise, so would you say I'd be better advised to go for a stage 2 kit? If so does anyone have any experience of those?

No experience of stage 2 personally. The heavier one which i got has been perfect, its made no extra noise than the original but is a great upgrade if you're gonna be upgrading bits to your polo.

So what actually has to be done to the bell housing so this kit will fit, and why does it need done?

because it wasnt designed to be a straight swap with the polo. I have no idea what had to be done, my garage did it for me

Garage fitted mine but never mentioned any modifications to the bell housing, as far as I am aware I thought it was a straight swap!

Ok guys just to update, I went ahead and bought an ecs stage 1 kit as the quoted torque and bhp figures it can take are wheel figures (weird I know considering the placement of the flywheel....) the modifications to the bell housing mentioned earlier are minimal and in some cases not even necessary. Basically due to the fact the bell housing is cast sometimes imperfections can cause the new flywheel to foul slightly on it, I assume this is due to lower tolerances between the housing and new flywheel. The instructions advise to turn the engine over by hand a few times to see where it is catching (white marks will be present) then shave away a small amount of material until there is no fouling. This in no way should affect the structural integrity of the bell housing and appears to be minimal in most cases.

Hope that helps clear up any confusion!
