Post by tedward »

VW Polo 1.6TDI (2009 - current model) losing coolant. 35,000 miles. Dealership claim to be baffled and can offer no explanation.
Any ideas anyone?

There have been some reports of leaks around the water pumps on the Mk8 polos - yours may be affected.

Thanks Alex
During a recent full service the dealership claims to have searched for visual signs of a leak and visually couldn't see anything

I'm guessing your losing a fair amount of coolant?

Ask them to run a coolant pressure test. That'll show up what's going on.

Had the radiator replaced on my 2011 gti couple of months back. Car had only covered 25,000 miles and lost all its coolant within 10 miles on the motorway! Turned out to be the internal seal on the rad, which Volkswagen admitted is a common problem with most polo's. Its a design flaw apparently. The strangest thing about mine though is there was no signs and when they pressurised the system, it took a lot of pressure to make it leak, more than normal. Could quite well be them same problem with yours matey.

I also had a replacement radiator (SEAT Ibiza but same thing) just out of warranty on a 2009 car caused by a coolant leak. Its a fairly common problem on these.

I've had a coolant leak on 1.4 was a slow leak half litre every few hundred miles. just had it diagnosed as water pump failure and replaced with timing belt early days but leakage seems to have stopped.

could see some pink crystals on bottom of air con pump and had leakage on drive at front right hope this might help.
