Volkswagen Polo Upgrades!

Post by VwPolo2010 »

Ok so about 3 months ago I bought myself a 2010 Volkswagen Polo. It's only a 1.2 S edition but it does me for now. It's Black and came with a nice touch screen Bluetooth kit with voice control. It has 14 inch steel wheels with the standard trims and is standard all over.

Now after 3 months I'm looking to upgrade it. The main things I want to do are:

* Upgrade Steel wheels to alloys
* Upgrade the front of the car by buying Fog lights
* Upgrading the light bulbs (indicators as well)
* Upgrading the stereo
* Upgrading the steering wheel - Not sure if this is possible? Basically I'm thinking about replacing it with one with steering wheel controls? HELP? lol.
* And possibly some more if you guys want to give me some suggestions?

So first off this is the little beauty at the moment:

So on with the first upgrade: Alloys
I found these 16" alloys on facebook of all places, came from a vw golf? the guy said they should fit and they're only £100. Ka-Ching!

Image

What do you guys think? Should I just go elsewhere? (not wanting to spend too much which is why I'm attracted to these)

Second thing is fog lights. I did some browsing on this forum and found a lovely post containing all I need (thank you to that guy) so basically I'm going to buy:

The Fog lights - http://www.ebay.com/itm/150779414644?ss ... 1438.l2649
The Wiring - http://www.kufatec.co.uk/shop/en/volksw ... ction_ms=1
The switch - now I'm needing some help here, the one on that forum I mentioned seems to be "out of stock" on ebay so can somewhere direct me towards a compatible one?

So I do have it pretty figured but can someone explain the process (incase I go wrong somewhere) just a few bullet points would be amazing!

Number three on my list was the light bulbs
Generally I know I need some type of xenon bulb (completely clueless as to what that means) so if someone can help me out here? possibly give me a link to a good set of bulbs then I would be sooo pleased.
as for the indicator bulbs I saw a nice guide on here and I liked the bulbs he used so I'm going to go with them:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PY21W-BAU15s- ... 1e655f387e

Now I was wanting to upgrade the stereo BUT I have the standard one and I found that I can get an AUX in adapter for it (I only need it for playing music through my phone) so I might just invest in that adapter instead but opinions may change my mind so let me know what you think! Here the options I have:
Aux in adapter:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUX-Adapter-C ... 19e254a2b8

New Stereo:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DAB-Volkswage ... 27d7746a1b
OR:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DAB-Volkswage ... 27d7824fda

Help would be appreciated with everything above, the steering wheel part I'm going to leave for now. Thanks so much for any help!

Oh and sorry for making it so big!

Alloys look they could do with a refurb, the one on the bottom left looks pretty badely kurbed. But they may just need a good clean.

Xenon lights are illegal if I remember correctly, they need to be factory fitted with the self-adjusting (or is it self-leveling?) thingy to be legal. But then again that's not stopping most people fitting them!!

Seconded, I'd be very clear with the Alloy seller on the condition. For the sake of a couple of hundred quid it's not worth risking an accident on dodgy wheels. I'd be tempted to buy mint or new. Don't forget that your insurance company will want to hike up your premium for slapping alloys on it. Might actually be worth keeping the steelies and painting or powder coating them if you want a different look?

Xenon's are a pain in the backside if you want to remain legal. A lot of people swap the bulbs out come MOT time but I'm sure if you're unlucky enough to have to claim on your insurance they'll try and use it as an excuse not to pay out. I'm considering just getting some whiter bulbs for my car after regrettign not specing the Xenons from new.

I think the fogs do make a huge difference to the look although to be honest I rarely if ever use mine. some people fit them and then never wire them up

Just be careful what model Golf the alloys came off. The 6R Polo uses a 5 x 100 PCD. The MK4 Golf is also a 5 x 100PCD, but if they are off a MK5 /6 Golf, then they are a 5 x 112 PCD, so won't fit without the appropriate adapters.

Hi thanks for the advice!

Basically the guy that was selling those alloys gave them a good clean for me and they came up great, slight kurbing but nothing major, found a guy willing to do a refurb on all 4 for £30 quid each before I even went to see them. Anyway it wasn't my day as they weren't fitting must have been the newer golf models :/ Hopefully I can find a decent pair that will fit my volkswagen? I know that using the steelies would be ok but I really wanted a set of alloys, I guess I just think it makes the whole care look better :) So yeah do you guys know a good website to get a set of alloys from? I'm not bothered about price as much as I expect new ones to be expensive but I suppose its worth it.

As for the Xenons I wasn't quite sure what I was meaning here, I seen people talking about them a lot so I thought thats what I was after, Basically my halogen bulbs are really poor at night (I do a lot of night driving because of my circumstances) So I need a brighter and better bulb (I thought these were called xenons) Halogen ones are kind of out of the question because of they're poor ability.

Fog lights are ordered and i'll update with a pic when I have them fitted, anyone know how the wiring goes? I'm guessing just through the heat shield and into the dash? Could be way off so correct me please! :D

Also ordered a central locking kit from Rclick... Can't believe I didn't have remote central locking as standard :(

I should hopefully have 16" alloys by next week so you'll get to see how it looks 8)

On another note, I've bought this
http://www.rclick.co.uk/product_info.ph ... cts_id=671
and I'm needing help with fitting it when it comes, basically is this just plug and play? and if it is then where do I plug it in? I read somewhere about something in the boot but I'm not wanting to start messing around until I know for sure where it goes lol.

My other question regards the key, I will be given 2 blank keys which I can get cut to match my current one, so will it start the engine?
This is my current key

And this is the inside of it (The spring is for the battery which powers the small light)

So overall there seems to be no transponder chip but I do have an imobiliser so I'm completely confused by this, if someone could help with this problem I would be so chuffed I'd give them a hug

Thanks for your help so far guys!

Well that shows how much I know haha! So basically do I just take that out and put it in the new one? Also any idea where the central locking kit should be installed? Thanks for your help! :D

I've heard that with the RClick Kit, you can just leave the key in the car so that the car will still start. Not too safe though!

Hmm well I got that Rclick kit and I got the key cut to match mine for £5. Now my problem is getting the fit kitted and the transponder swapped. A local garage electrician said he would do it for £150, think its worth it? Thanks! :)
