dangerously slow front wipers

Post by nofeeling »

Trouble again ,wipers this time .
Very very slow even when blades are lifted from screen .
Its just happened ,no gradual loss of speed ,so I`m thinking its the motor .Would VCDS pick up a faulty motor ?
Anyone had this trouble before ?
Would the motor/linkage from a similar age Ibiza be a straight swap ?

There is a VAG parts listing available to search on on the internet, so check there first for compatibility. Normally it will be the extra friction in the arm shaft bearings that cause trouble, clean and lub and see if that sorts things a bit.

Eventually removed linkage to find drivers side seized .All cleaned and regreased both spindles ready to refit tomorrow weather permitting .
Strangely only the drivers spindle has a rubber cover over the c clip .

If you are meaning that it was the driver's side ball/socket part that was seized, did you find that it was rusty?
Why I ask is, daughter had an early 2001 6K Ibiza and before I knew anything about this, the driver's side ball/socket had failed and fallen off at one end, that caused the wiper arms to collide and bend the arms!! When I got to it, her BF had put the link back on and wound duct tape round it to support it, that worked long enough for me to get two new links arms ordered in and fitted them - in that case the nylon cup had failed due to all the rusting up and could not now retain the ball in its socket.
Now, I've considered that the root cause of that failure was water running down the screen and running down the spindle area off the water deflector due to there being a useless seal there - and the water ended up on the link arm socket area. Her newer Ibiza, the latest model, still has that problem, and when I looked at greasing wife's 9N Polo, it also did not look like that area was much better protected from this potential problem.

On a slightly worse water getting under bonnet problem, a friend at work has a Leon, previous shape, he ended up with engine problems which were fixed free, but he was charged for sorting another problem which was due to water getting in and dripping down on the 1.2TSI engine coil pack, he was charged for a new coil pack as the old one was faulty due to rusting, but the root cause of the water getting into that area was covered by Seat!

No rust at all on either joints .It was the actual spindle itself that was seized ,took a good 15 mins in a vice to separate it .I`ve smeared a good bit of grease on each spnindle to try and stop this reoccuring .
Considering VWs supposed build quality ,there is very little protection from the elements .

Hum, I seem to remember back in the '70s I used to replace the seal that was covering the top of the spindle assemblies (Ford Escorts) to prevent that sort of thing happening. I find that it is best not to assume that VW are trying very hard wrt quality and common sense, they are still better than some though.

Both spindles had the O ring seals under the C clips but the drivers side had a sort of top hat rubber seal/cover ,nothing on pass side though.
I have a spare linkage from a Rover 45 ,that has a much better rubber cover on the spindles ,I`ll check to see if they fit the Polo .

I have had this problem twice on my POLO 9N.
I had to take out the spindles which were seized and clean and grease them.
No Problem since.
See my posting about this as I also found a company which posted a video on what to do and parts for wiper linkages !
