"The Volkswagen paint warranty is not worth the paper it's written on" after 3 years. Those are not my words they are the words of the chap who dealt with warranty claims at the dealership where I bought mine from new. A couple of days after getting the car I noticed some tiny blisters on the inside of the passenger door "A-Pillar" He looked at it and after going over it with a paint thickness gauge for 5 mins said he would book it into the paint shop to be inspected and repaired after he acknowledged it was a manufacturing defect.

In chatting I said the paint warranty is good for 3 years and body 13 in the manual even if I hadn't noticed it so soon? He laughed. Apparently the 13 year part is for through holes! So how are you going to convince VW it started on its own and wasn't caused by damage (chip/hole/dent, etc) if it's already a hole?

Hope they hold their hand up and sort it but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Last time I washed mine I noticed I have some tiny little bubbles/spiders right at the rear edge of the drivers side sill. Mines nearly 12 but VW quality ain't what it used to be across the board.

LOL.. Yeah that as well. Probably more to do with poor cleanliness/drying time and inadequate paint prep during construction.

They are supposed to be Zinc phosphate coated by maybe they just show the car the tin!?

@wolfie; Agree that paintwork and corrosion warranties aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. That probably applies to most car manufacturers though and not just VW.

VW’s corrosion warranty used to be limited to through-corrosion from the inside out - i.e. corrosion starting inside a closed box section / cavity rusting through to the outside. I dare say it’s still the same as they’re unlikely to open themselves up to more potential corrosion claims by improving the warranty cover. Warranty claims for surface corrosion are therefore likely to be declined as many - if not all - of these will (in VW’s opinion) be the result of an ‘external impact’ - i.e. a stone chip exposing the metalwork under the paint to the elements (e.g. rain, moisture, road salt etc.) resulting in surface corrosion.

I always inspect my paintwork for stone chip damage when I wash my car. If there are any new stone chips since the last wash, they get repaired there and then (touch up paint is one of the first things I buy after getting a different / new car).

With paintwork claims, it’s unlikely that blistering paintwork would be covered; the paintwork warranty is likely to be restricted to defects arising from incorrect formulation of the paint or incorrect application, inadequate coverage or improper curing of the paint in the factory. I dare say that VW would probably say the paintwork blisters are the result of surface corrosion, and that’s not covered under the corrosion warranty either.

Look after your paintwork and bodywork guys; don’t rely on VW to fix it for you under their paintwork and corrosion warranties.

Yup. VW are no worse or better than most manufacturers paint warranty wise. Gut feeling is that paint quality has slipped. That may in part be due to new manufacturing processes and paint systems that are more eco friendly. No plans to swap mine so I will probably either visit a paint shop and have the little spots dealt with or maybe give "chips-away" or similar a ring to see if they are interested. When I got rid of my previous 9N that was 10 years old and the paint was still faultless.

I'm the same as yourself with stone-chips. As soon as I see them I'm on them. On that front I've been lucky and have remarkably few for its age. Probably because I've reached an age where I drive like a grandad..
