Hi SRGTD, I hope you're well? 100℅ yes, you're right and thankfully they do have the openings for the side airbags 🙂. I'm thinking about protecting the boot, now too. They do ones that fully cover the inside of the boot. Definitely need to protect the bumper tailgate area too!
I’m fine thanks. I have a boot liner (branded Novline) but it’s one of the tray types with a raised edge to contain spillages, rather than one that covers the entire boot area including the sides of the boot compartment. I didn’t go for an OEM VW one as the one I bought was much cheaper and IMHO better quality than those lightweight polystyrene / foam type liners.

If I was to fit some form of rear bumper protector, I’d probably go for the ‘invisible’ clear PPF type as I’m not a fan of the more visible bumper protectors (e.g. black vinyl or stainless steel).

The boot tray I have is the foam - cheap type. I'll keep looking for solutions. I'll keep you posted on the bumper protector and the boot liner 🙂
