1.2 TSI fuel economy

Post by Tex »

Hi,

I have a 90hp 1.2 TSI, I seem to be refuelling quite often, i do a lot of city driving, i average 8.5 to 9.5 l per 100KM when driving in the city, i alo have DSG box. On the Motorway if i cruise in 7th gear i get around 6 l per 100km.

I have done a tet ince November last year. On average i only get 450km out of a full tank, that i until the last bar on the fuel guage, i can get 480 with the light coming on. With a heavy foot i get 380 to 400 and the mot eco i have seen i 500km, which was a lot of motorway driving.

I have 100k km on the clock, i rarely use AC, sometimes on the motorway.

Today i filled the car up and took a casual drive, after 16km drive the car says it will do 500km till empty.

This seems heavy for a 1.2 TSI, especialy DSG.

What do you guys think?

I have a 1.2 as well only with 110 bhp (not much of a difference in fuel mileage) and I drive it pretty calmly most of the time, mostly highway with medium traffic. I average about 15-16.5 km\l per tank. My ‘record’ for most efficient tank though is 619.
I also drive without ac but because the car’s black and it gets quite hot in here I use the ac to cool it down in the beginning of the journey and then roll the windows down (also put the sunroof on tilt which helps a lot).
A good way to monitor your efficiency is to use the blue trainer in the screen I put it up all the time to remind me how much is the consumption, so I don’t get tempted to drive fast [emoji28]
If after you’ve maybe changed the way you drive and don’t see much of a difference maybe there’s something really wrong in your car. I hope I helped [emoji854]Image

Thanks for the reply,

mmm, i wonder if something is wrong, drove 100km on Saterday and said i had 500km range left, all highway driving, today it went from 500 to 450km after just 10km of driving with 7l/100.

Any physical componets to check to see if there is issues with fuel?

Also on the back seat of the car everytime i take the seats out underneath theres always a liquid, not sure if its oil or petrol.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but under the back seats is the fuel pump/ filter. Maybe it got replaced and not sealed properly. I have a friend which had the exact same problem (not a vw though), fuel would pour out from beneath the rear seats which resulted in poor fuel economy and fuel smell when taking corners at a fast rate. Maybe you should get that checked.

As said, if it was petrol there would be a strong smell in the car, maybe it is rear screen washer fluid coming from a leaking pipe?

Seems like oil, almost like engine oil.

Is it not just that colour because it has been in contact with one of the sound damping material, there is absolutely no reason why anything like engine oil or any other oil could get there from some part of the car.

Could this not just be that something has been spilt in there some time ago, and maybe even have soaked into the foam cushion material of the rear seat base?

This is new oil, cleaned a few week ago and checked yesterday and it new oil, are the seats oiled by any chance, also would there be oil in the dampners?

Just a update, changed my units to MPG UK, drove about 6 miles today, on roads with 50kmph speed limit, no robots just round abouts etc , averaged 31MPG , sounds bad .

31MPG is terrible and even worse as your ambient temperatures should be higher than UK 90% of the year.

Even on short shopping journeys during lockdown, 30MPH and 40MPH speed zones, I almost ended up with 60MPG on a 6 mile journey starting off with a "cold" engine, car is 1.2TSI 110PS 6 speed manual transmission.

Edit:- if you still think that petrol is leaking out of the tank, lift the rear seat base and you should see a large black rubber cover with a lead coming into the car from/to it, the tank and the fuel gauge sender is under there, sorry if you know that already.

Hi, it is terrible, and i have the DSG so it goes into 7th at 60 kph , i have a lot of roads i just coast down as well, i did have a look thgere, it looks fine, i dont know what more to do, ingectors...fuel filter..anything else to check?

On the highway, at 120 KPH i can get 45, wixed with urban roads it is between 40 to 42, best i have seen was 47, that waws 9-kph in 7th, motly drafting behind cars. car is also the 90HP model.

I think i will have it checked at the garage, but anything that i could check myself?

Also out of curisoty, if you push your TSI's , obvisourly not high over the limit but aggressive accelerations, what MPGs do you get?

I get around 28 to 21 MPG , not going over 70KPH on roads. Just some shifting at 3.5k with foot a little more heavy.

I have the 1.2 TSI 90Hp with 120000 km (74564 miles)

5th speed manual gearbox.

In average, 6l/100 km (mixed), in best condition 4.5l/100 km.
The worse is in highway at 150 km/h (7.5-8L/100 km).

Maybye trye to check your spark plug/coil igniter.
Mine (sparks plug) were out of tolerence (gap over 1mm) and brand new are gaped at 0.7mm.

Change your fuel filter (super easy job, just avoir to take a shower  )
Check your engine air filter.

And the last option, clean your Charge Air pressure sensor (2 in total: one on the high pressure pipe, and one juste after the air cooler, under the air box).
Sometimes due to oil they can be dirty and send bad datas.

BTW, I'm running only premium SP98.
With 45L I can manage 750-800 km.

But remember, it's winter.
Air is way colder, more dense. You are using light, heating/AC system. It's using quite a lot fuel.

I completely forgot about this thread. Haven’t posted on this forum for a while. But during Covid, when I was an essential worker I actually used my polo more often than I used it regularly (now has 76k km :P)

I then had 215/45 16 tires (Falken ze914) and used to aggressively hypermile (cruised on 80-90 kph behind busses and trucks). Managed 750 km for a tank! Now I have 17 inch tires and more sporty Michelin pilot sport 4’s a dsg tune (which hold more revs and gets to boost earlier which is very nice), plus a lot more traffic so I’m lucky to get 550-ish
