VW UK Price Increase; April 2023

Post by SRGTD »

Looks as if there was a price increase of just under 3% across the Polo model range from 01/04/2023. Below are the ‘before’ and ‘after’ list prices;

Before price increase;
Life; £19,505
Style; £22,580
R Line; £22,580
GTI; £28,540

After price increase;
Life; £20,070 (2.89% increase)
Style; £23,205 (2.77% increase)
R Line; £23,205 (2.77% increase)
GTI; £29,370 (2.90% increase)

This is why I laughed when I saw an "estimated" price for the ID2.all as sub 25k euros. By the time this comes out, I bet we are easily looking at £30k+ (probably the "starting" price).

Yes, sub-€25k does seem a little optimistic for the ID.2all.

I dare say much of the tech and options in the ID.2all will be subscription-based as that seems to be the way BMW is pricing options and IMHO it’s only a matter of time before other manufacturers do the same. So ignoring the effects of inflation on the ‘estimated price’ between now and launch date in a couple of years time, €25k would be likely to buy quite a basic car in terms of equipment levels and functionality. To activate some of those ‘must-have’ options and functions may mean some owners paying a large monthly subscription, and that could add up to quite a sizeable four figure sum over a 3–4 year ownership period.

Back to the latest Polo prices; I paid just over £20k for my Polo GTI+ when it was new 31 months ago, which illustrates how crazy car prices have become over the last 2-3 years.

I checked the price on second hand GTI+' the other day, some (low mileage, 18-22k) are going for roughly £20k. I'm assuming these prices increases are good news for anyone looking to sell. The market is crazy.

I’ve just done the same. GTI+’s of the same / similar age as mine with a similar low mileage are currently being advertised for sale at VW dealerships from £21k, with some being advertised at close to £24k! 😮. So out of curiosity I also checked WBAC who normally offer the lowest price of all the car buying services. Their current price for my car is £21,088 which is more than I paid for it 31 months ago, meaning my car’s not suffered any depreciation during my period of ownership. That’s crazy for a mass produced car approaching three years old.

As you’ve said, it’s good news for anyone selling, but with relatively long wait times, high APR’s and dealers less willing to discount than they were 2–3 years ago, not such good news for anyone buying.
