Cannot connect to [03 ABS Brakes] with VCDS

Post by Tigrou »

Hello,

I have a Polo 6R TDI 1.6 (from 2010)

Few months ago, I had issues with the ABS (the 3 related lights show up on the dashboard).

Image

No matter what I tried in VCDS, I couldn't connect to the ABS controller (VCDS says "No Response from Controller" after 3 attempts).

Image

I use a Hex V2 cable (STM32F429 chip). It was shipped with VCDS 22.3.1.
I checked the fuses and updated VCDS to 24.5 (CB: 0.4643.4 FW: 0.256), still didn't work.

Image

I concluded the ABS controller was dead and took it to a repair shop.
Turns out the ABS controller was fine, it was a wheel sensor which was faulty. The mechanic could connect to ABS controller without any issue (with a very expensive VW kit)

Today I got the 3 lights again. Im pretty sure another sensor failed. I plugged VCDS and again, I can't connect to ABS.
Auto scan works fine (except it can't connect to ABS), I can connect to engine ECU or other controllers.

It's unclear to me what wrong with VCDS or the cable. Is this a well known issue ?

Here is the Auto-Scan result (engine was off) :

It's a clone cable and they are all s**t. It also can't talk to your engine.

You are right it's a clone cable but noneless it should work.

The connection with the engine was not possible because it was turned off during auto-scan.
Everything else works (other controllers, output tests, ...).

Try without running engine.
Otherwise buy the original cable or visit a member with one

If I were you, and due to the age of the vehicle, I would have changed all 4 ABS sensors when you took the car to the repair shop, or rather, I would have replaced them myself.

IMHO, the ORIGINAL VCDS is a GREAT bet, fast and effective diagnostic tool, constantly updated by the creators, with just one use the difference in cost compared to the tempting copies/clones is amortized. It is 100% worth it even for sporadic use. The more you use it, the happier you will be to have the Original VCDS.

I have the latest VAS, VCP, etc... and I use the Original VCDS on many occasions, its use is devilishly effective.

check the small fuse box that is on the battery ( its under a cover) for loose connections.
Also clean with sandpaper under the but that attaches the small fuse box to the metal type fuse that is on the battery.

From my expirience you wont be able to communicate not even with vas5054A, elm327... indicating that there is some strange gremlin issue.

Maybe try with some other diagnostic tool and report back.

Edit read the post: deff issue in diagnostic tool. try getting the v1 version with atmega chip that one worked flawlessly.

Sorry im typing this 7 times i get logged out from some strange reason.

First, thanks all for your comments.
Maarten wrote:Try without running engine.
I tried it already, including riding the car before as it would magically wake up the ABS.
I also completely uninstalled and re-installed VCDS (including drivers) but that does not change anything.

That would be the best but I don't know anybody with a rosstech cable in my region.
The real one cost about 5 times more than clone I got (which is about 80 EUR). I don't think it worth the investment anymore as I will probably not keep that car in years to come

Either clone cable is faulty, either there is something wrong with ABS that prevent diagnostic (eg: broken wire).
ABS is still working for sure.

I am planning to visit the car mechanic I usually go to, in early January. I will be with him all the time so I'm going to see what's wrong.
Last time he was able to connect to ABS even if I couldn't myself (with very expensive kit, it costs 4 figures + yearly license according to what he told me).

Good idea, I will probably go that way. The wo sensors on the rear wheels already failed and have been replaced this year.

I tried that last time, verified all fuses and the connection between fuse box and battery. At that time, I concluded ABS was dead (but it wasn't the case).
I also wanted to check ABS pins but connector is impossible to detach. The red lock does not want to slide down, despite many attempts.
