I'm planning to get a mk1/2 gti with a friend at some point as a joint project, probably just do it up and sell it on as insurance will be insane for two 18 year olds, but it should make a pretty cool project anyway. Something to be proud of

erm, got 1001 ideas at the mo! allthough i am watching some anthrcite alloys on ebay at the moment

im only 19 and only quote i've had so far is Â£1200 TPFT!

Yeah, for the two of us the lowest quote was Â£2,200 tptf

It'd be a bit of a shame really, if we put all that effort into it and then could never drive it

But still, it's as much about having a project as having a nice car

I've wanted to get a 'project' car as well, even been scanning ebay for a Mk1 GTI or Cabby, thing is:

a) can't afford to keep one car let alone two!

b) don't have enough space to keep one car let alone two and

c) I wouldn't be able to do anything to the car so I'd be shipping it off to JBS for them to do it for me...not much of a project car eh?

Course you would be able to do stuff to it.. half the point of a project car is that you can tear it apart, rebuild it, learn as you go and not have to worry about being able to get to work the next morning. Plus, mk1/2 golfs and mk1/2/3 polos are a huge amount easier to learn to work on than your 6n2 - massive bonnet space, simple layout and barely any electronics to deal with. It's not hard to learn what you're doing if you spend a bit of time playing around with it

I guess you are right GroovyCarrot,

I remember my old Mk3 Polo, you could actually see the ground underneath in the engine bay, in my GTI all I can see is plastic and metal and it's so dark in there!

Just have to wait till my financial situation is better and may be I shall have to get myself a new toy to play around with...just got a horrible feeling the car will be worth less than I bought it for!

Where were the engines in the Mk1 Golfs? In the boot was it? Ha ha ha, just kidding, I know they are mid engined! (ha ha ha!)

petts try the insurance factory in birmingham, i dont thave their number ot hand but my brother paid like Â£800 tpft on a gti at 19, and its was an 8v

Perspective: 1043cc in my featherweight mk2 polo is very slow. 1043cc in a slightly more than featherweight golf is ridiculously slow.. 900cc?! Suprised it even moved

Sounds a bit like a VW camper my dad had years ago, custom built from times before people realised that caravan equipment really ought to be light weight. So, all of the caravan equipment and the frame for the van was made of solid wood, teak for the most part. The weight of the fittings took it up to the maximum legal weight before you'd even put a driver in it, and it was fitted with a 1200cc aircooled engine

Must have put out about 20bhp/tonne, if that! Ridiculous contraption that was.. sadly he sold it before it even became a novelty classic, probably worth many thousands now

There was a 1043cc mk2 early on according to the parkers review of the mk2 and there was prob an 895cc mk1, the golf cabrio is a mk1 afterall...a mk2 cabrio is based on the mk3 golf

Are we talking polos or golfs here?!

the smallest engine that came in a mk1 golf is a 1.1 as far as i know. in the mk2 golf there were a few 1.1's made, but not very many at all. On the cabrio note, they made a mk1 and a Mk3 but never a mk2 version.
