Scraping noise from steering column

Post by James0121 »

Hey up

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this. When turning corners theres an irritating scraping sound it doesn’t effect steering but is getting on my nerves anyone know the solution before I sit down and dismantle it?

Slightly different topic the bump strips off a 6n2 will fit on a 6N once the stud things are cut off wont they?

Cheers James

i'd had it a few times that scraping noise

and it just dissapears as quick as it appears

(but my steering colume thing broke one day - the adjustable height thing wouldnt lock and the wheel was bouncing - was hilarious and scary)

the scrapping noise is probably and more than likely the horn connection! these is a ring of brass on the steering collum, and on the back of ur steering wheel is a sorta springy pin! its those rubbing together as u turn the wheel!

remember i have been in ur car and i know the sound that u are talking about and i'm sure i told u this before!

u need to remove the steering wheel (not sure how), clean up the surfaces with some rag or summit and i used a bit of silicone grease to stop mine making noise! when i did that it got quieter and quieter as time went on and it has now gone i believe!

only time i've had that, it was rubbing on the pedal box which was getting (imperceptably, at first) loose --- and snapped the next day

just give a peek in the footwell with a torch to make sure that aint the case

Turned out the VW mechanic didnt re-grease the steering column after working on it, sounds like theve done the same to you !!!!

pretty lame if u ask me.
