Is it basically behaving like a one litre polo? (Loss of power, hesitation etc..) I had this problem awhile back, and Im not entirely sure what fixed it. Its still not * really * fixed either. Everytime I start the car, I leave it running for approx. 30 seconds till its happy idling, then drive off. Issue still persists even when car is warm, so 30 second rule each time. Do the following anyway;
1. Clean out the throttle body with carb cleaner.
2. Clean out the MAF sensor with electric contact cleaner, and use a cotton ear bud for the delicate sensor bit inside.
3. Remove both battery terminals from the battery (the positive and negative cables basically), and get a jump lead, and connect the positive cable to negative cable and leave that overnight. It basically's ment to reset the ECU. Now before you do this, I'm not 100% sure if this will also reset the immobiliser (and if it does, then it means you need to recode / pair up your keys again) So you might want to check this before attempting this last step

I cleaned out the throttle body every 6 months so I dont think it will be that, it will probably be spotless when you remove the BMC but its always worth giving it another quick clean to be on the safe side. Spark Plugs didnt need changing but you were not to know that, HT leads were never changed by me nor was the coilpack so that was a good shout.
I hope you get it sorted soon Mandy

Pretty sure you need a 1.8t to solve your problems like iv said before lol.... It's got me baffled this behavior but readying the whole car over night may cure it...

Hell yeah!
Basically took it apart last night and cleaned everything possible and put it all back together today..... Thats after changing the leads, plugs and coilpack aswell
Both of us have been out on a canny drive each to test it and the fault (whatever it was) has gone. And seems to be running even sweeter than it was before!
And....... Breathe!

So relieved!!!!
Now I can concentrate on buying goodies for it instead of garage bills! Although, the first thing on my agenda tomorrow is to arrange some breakdown cover since I don't have none and I can't keep relying on my bloke and his friends to rescue me!
