I've found a donor car in t'breakers but the chap wants £600+ vat for it (£705)

Won't be happening then...

Lets not get into comparing Oil Burners and Petrol cars, because its just not like with like. For a start people with diesels are tight gits to start with an probably would get 60mpg in a 1.4 8V!
There is just one thing that still confuses me.... If you have a diesel and it starts to burn engine oil:
1) How would you know?
2) How do you stop the engine if it gets excessive!

I like the idea of a 1.4 tdi in mine as it'd be quicker, 50% more economical and I'd still get cheap tax. Tight? Probably but I don't want to spend more than I have to on a daily driver when there's so much else that needs money spent on it. I'm not going to be worrying about mpg with the G for sure

Yeah, but at the end of the day, if you put a diesel in, then you will end up with a car that is a diesel, and the best thing about the petrol is that it isn't a diesel.
Whilst the peak power is the same or better than a petrol its performance isn't because it has a very narrow power band and its made of cast concrete rather than alloy. But the diesels are catching up..... There are some pretty good ones now. I hope they get really good, ready for when we run out of oil.
Diesels can run on fuel made from rape seed oil etc. Did anyone wonder why there is so much pushing of diesel development and millions of fields of rape seed? So not a good time to invest in sparkplugs then!

I think they are pretty good in big ships, trains and maybe even light commercial transport.
But not in a car, gives me a headache. I hate getting it over my hands when you fill up, and I really hate the way that come MOT time they stick a brick on the accelerator. And when driving, you get a bit of power at about 3,000 RPM then its all over and you need to change. And if you start on the drive in the morning or go pick up your girlfriend it sounds like your in a taxi, or a royal mail van.
They are gaining acceptance, but they still have a long way to go before I would buy one, but its getting closer. I drove a new passat (53 reg) a while back and appart from the sound of 1000 blacksmiths under the bonnet hammering the engine block and the fact that it ran out of revs constantly and it smoked and stank, it wasn't as bad as I thought they were.

I've never got this 'hate getting it on my hands' thing because I don't in the same way I don't when filling up a petrol vehicle. I'm not saying it's pleasant stuff but neither's petrol or the brake dust on the front wheels when cleaning your car. As for rev ranges, horses for courses really, different petrol engines require different techniques to get the best from them. I'm not saying they're the most fun engines to drive, far from it, but that's not why I'd buy one. If I could only have one car though I don't know what fuel type I'd choose.

Woah, now i'm really getting really really worried.
Could my economy be so crap because it's an automatic? Auto's suck up so much petrol.
The car is driven smoothly, and rarely booted.
P.S. - Was really happy that my car managed to do 200 on a full tank, lol, but then that was kicked down when i read your stories about 350/400 and so on....
Ha, i ain't paying for petrol anyway, not my fault we got an auto, i never wanted an auto

200 miles a tank? Well I get about 280 out of nearly a full tank of BP Ultimate. I run it down to the red zone, just as the light is coming on, and fill up from there. IIRC its usually about 36-38mpg depending on if I managed to get out of town for a couple of longer journeys. If all my driving is in town at 30s and 40s with traffic I'll be lucky to get 230-240 miles from the same amount of Ultimate. Still, not too bad for a GTi, I'm happy with my economy

Well having an auto should mean you are in the right gear at the right time all the time. But it doesn't quite work out like that, because the torque convertor is always slipping, and only locks up on some cars. Consequently its probably about 5mph worse than a manually geared car. Also if you look at your car information, you will find that the auto is quite a but heavier, almost like carrying another (small) passenger around all the time.
My Dad has a mazda that's an auto, and it gets about 32mpg and the manual is just below 40.

I don't have the manual to hand unfortunately, not at the moment anyway.
Defo. going to get VW to service the car PROPERLY this time, tell them what i believe is wrong, especially the economy figures and the central locking rubbish.
Arghhhh, and i thought VW were renowned for their great build quality?

P.S. - Might aswell swap for a bloody GTi with the mileage i'm getting

bloody *beep* car.

i must drive like a right granny cos i get to maybe 330 miles before it goes into the red zone!!
Actually, its mostly motorway stuff and longer journeys. Doesn't seem to matter too much what speed i'm doing on the motorway either!
