Sorry to threadjack, but while on the subject of gearboxes, mine has been giving me jip of late.

I'm not sure whether it may need the gearbox oil changing. The problems I've been having are:

*Trying to select reverse is an absolute pain sometimes. Took 4 attempts once to get it to actually engage, and that was after taking it out of R, putting it into 1st and then trying R again. This has happened once or twice in the 2 weeks I have been pootling about, and can feel 'crunchy' sometimes once its finally in R. Other times this does occur, but 2nd attempt and its in Reverse

*(Maybe me not used to the car yet?) Whilst driving, going from say 2nd to 3rd, it can be rather 'crunchy' to get into 3rd, though this is a rare occurance.

Sounds like a slightly scaled down of the problems I'm having.. worth trying the gearbox oil and tightening up the clutch cable. Reverse will probably always be crunchy, seems to be a feature of 80's/early 90's VWs...

hey all had a look at my adjustment nut on my clutch today to try and take down the slack abit only to be abit confused as to what i was meant to be adjusting. There was a small nuts on the cable but everytime i turned it it just turned the entire cable and span back. Photos would be great if someone could provide where i need to be adjusting, you`ll make me a happy man!!!!

The two screws you're talking about - the one closer towards the end of the cable is a locking screw, it prevents the other one from loosening. The other one, up against the rubber block which hooks into the clutch lever, is the adjusting nut. You want to release the locking nut so it's not up against the adjusting nut, which will make it easier to turn, then screw in the adjusting nut. You'll probably want to use a bit of WD40 and use a pair of pliers to stop the rest of the cable from turning while you do it.
