Well, with my four speed box, I could only get 90.

I've got to just under 100 with my GT box, but then my wheels started vibrating quite badly (as they're not balanced properly.)

I reckon I could get around 105 now in my 1 litre (on flat road, so no cheating  ) when I get my new wheels.

I've managed 90 without really caining it, so I should imagine figures of 100 or so should be what you're getting. As for mpg, well, dunno if this particularly helps, but I got 300 miles off a full to the brim tank, though suspect it might have been a bit thirsty, maybe another 20-30 miles short of what it should have got from that tank.

Oh yeah, MPG - I've managed to just get 400 miles to a tank when I had my four speed box! That was driving like a good for nothing granny though.

Not had chance to see what I can get out the GT box.

both the gt and the mk2 will happily cruise at 90 (its a bit noisy in the gt though) As for top speed ive never dared. Redline in 5th is somewhere in the region of 135mph! (on both cars) Obviously the mk2 would never get there but the gt probably could. Ive never been past 110 in it though, and I rarely venture above 90. polos and high speed dont mix too well imo. (many of you will disagree im sure)

Nope I agree, I'm pretty sure that's what led to the death of my dizzy.

i was thinking more in terms of aerodynamics/handling/tyre width. I might change my tune when Ive finished lowering the GT and got some proper brakes on it. :D

There's no reason why a Mk3 Polo on decent suspension can't feel stable at 130mph or more... Braking comfortably from that speed is a different matter!

god you lot moaning about your brakes!!! :D

You should try driving a mini with 100bhp at the fly, and only 7.5" diameter disc brakes, 4 pot calipers, but no servo assistance!

Then you'll know what its like. I think the brakes on my 1043 Mk3 are fine! They stop the car well enough from any speed, and never seem to fade, although I imagine having a bigger engine may make things slightly scarier :?

Yes, 4 passengers in the car taking them to town, breaking for a round about SO glad there was nothing there because I jkust couldn't stop quickly enough . :?

But that was after a good five minutes of break accelerate breake etc etc round urban streets. Don't recommend it.

Who needs a servo? :P My GT brakes are just feckered is all. The ones on my mk2 are the same (minus the servo) and theyre fine.

Lol well i think the high speeds with the 4 speed box on a 1 litre (so even lower geared, to the tune of around 427 vs 406 compared to the 1.3 :D) are what's done for my engine, certainly. It loved it whilst it lasted, but to keep doing it requires the kind of maintenance i'm just not cut out for.

IMHO 105mph on the flat and 0-60 in 15 secs are dream figures for the 1043, unless you've tuned the guts out of it (breaking the 50hp barrier etc) past what the cost of buying, insuring, taxing and running a 1.3 would have been. Either that or (more likely) your speedo is BADLY over-reading. I know mine is at least a good 5% optimistic if not a whole lot more - i could get 95mph indicated, probably more like the official 89-90mph real speed. Those figures are optimistic even for the 1.3 CL after all!
Peak power is around 87mph, red zone comes in at 101, and limiter hits at 109 on the 4 speed / tight 5 speed. GT box would be more like 95mph for peak oomph, what there is of it.
(nippy enough around town though, which is what counts for more a lot of the time)

1.3 with 4 speed should get the power peak around the same speed, but not enter the red til about 106mph... and max about 114.
(5th --- GT box, 93/112/121 ... 8p, 106 for peak power (much higher speeds for redline / limiter ... and 85mph at about 4000rpm)

For reference, the new 70hp beast (with 94lbft at 2600 revs..) gets "only" about 105 as a dependable top speed (in 4th around peak power, or 5th at about 4250 with a slight tailwind and a prayer) with a much more trustworthy speedo, and 0-60 in about 13 secs. Granted its carrying about 200kg more, but it's still the equivalent of a well-maintained 1.3CL with a very good airfilter / exhaust combo and a de-cat.

at a guess he has an 8p box but you should just about be able to do 117 in 4th (and about 140 in 5th if you could get there)
