I did plenty of motorway miles in mine last year, visiting my girlfriend in Sheffield Uni.

400 mile round trip!

I find my car's actually very nice on long journeys.

BUT I don't do over 80 as I've got points.

Just got rid of the last of my point in august. Now back down to 0!

I've been at an indicated 160+ (in reality 147) in a Civic Type R. I wasn't driving. Silly speeds in a Golf GTi (2005) VW Sales guy driving.

Although the fastest was in a GT3. Not really going to post how fas that was though.

Yeah the fastest I've ever been was in a Porsche 996 Turbo, I won't say how fast we were going but we slowed down to 150mph to turn off the motorway.

Porsche brakes are so good that it will stop the car from 150mph in the distance from the top of a motorway slip road to the bottom without locking up.

I love fast cars!

Guidelines from the ACPO state for the motorway 79mph+ is a fixed penalty, 96mph+ is a court summons. So below 96mph you should get to keep your licence, and will get 4 points I believe, though it used to be 3 (as my dad can testify...). Below 85mph it's 3 points though according to the guidelines.

The same guidelines also suggest that if you're doing between 96 and 105 it's 5 or 6 points, whereas above that you're likely to get a ban. But if you're ending up in court it all depends upon the circumstances, and how good your brief is I guess!

Plus these are only guidelines, so not hard and fast rules.

Yeah, my car can take a long journey well too (coincidentally just recently did a 400 mile journey also). But it's not as good a car as say a larger saloon, or more specifically my parents Honda Civic saloon. It just loves the dual carriageway cruising speeds. Sits really happily, low revs, quiet cabin and it's smooth.

I've always been suprised how well mine cruises actually.. obviously it's not going to be comparable to a big modern saloon or anything, but for a small 1980's 1.0 hatchback I think it copes really well. I tend to cruise about 75 mph, give or take a bit depending on conditions, and I've always founds it's really quite civilised. Lots of revs obviously, but not intrusively loud, wind noise is very minimal, never has trouble maintaining speed uphill unless it's very steep, handling's absolutely fine (although wider, lower profile tyres did make a big difference over the skinny, tall standard ones), and the ride isn't too harsh. Not even any rattles or squeaks to speak of, but I think that's due to an extensive squeak erradication program I've had Only thing I could wish for (other than a bigger engine and / or a bigger car..) would be a 6th gear for cruising.. and a clutch that doesn't overheat and go heavy and crunchy on long journeys..

I got 3 points and a £60 fine for doing 97mph about 2 years ago, it seems I got off lightly.

Well to be honest all figures on speed limits etc mean f**k all. It all depends on the police officer, what mood they are in etc. Also if you get sent to court it dpends A LOT on the judge. Here's my example. My brother was driving a 1.6 new astra and got clocked doing 120mph on the motorway. He got a court summons and ended up getting a 2 week ban a £150 fine and 0 points. Yes thats right 0 points. Even his lawyer couldn't believe it. Just goes to show a lot is down to luck when it comes to penalties for speeding

I used to cruise at 80 in the 1-litre. In the GT i try to keep it below 90, usually about 85 - tho I do occasionally blat it on empty stretches!!

i know a girl whose got a 1.6 new astra and attempts to drive it everywhere at 120mph (who gave me... hmm not my first but my second sign that the 1 litre was just a little too slow to keep up with *all* convoys) ..... i'm sure she'd be tickled by that story (if i dont manage it first hehe)

to top it off ---- the astra, and her previous megane, are both motability cars. yep.

I got a 1.0 mk3 and have a 1.3 engine and box from a mk2 polo but the engine has no cylinder head so would the head of the mk3 fit the mk2 engine block?

yes, but the 1.0 mk3 cylinder head is not good. (small valves, port sizes etc)

but why post in this thread with that question?

so what would happen if you made a hybrid the other way round .... 1 litre block/pistons, 1.3 head?
