Hopefully they won't find anything else wrong otherwise the over whelming feeling of joy could be short lived. Sorry but looks like the bits won't be for sale after all. These car are tough little buggers. Thanks for all you comments. I will keep you posted on the recovery.

PS - the beer nulled the pain lastnight but paying for it dearly to day. Sat in the office severly hungover but very happy.

I went into the back of someone in my 1.4 8v, got out, looked at the front of the car and it was unmarked, got it checked out at a local bodyshop and the car was perfect, however the car infront needed a new rear bumper, boot fixed, etc. luckily it was a mate that i was following so no insurance problems etc etc...

Its been to the body shop (Solus) and needs £4500 of work doing and thats not including suspension components. So safe to say it is a total loss. Will be looking at something sensible - say a TDI :(

Sorry to hear that mate, you must be gutted, I saw your car and it did look pretty bad but I didn't think £4500 worth!
Hope you get your payout sorted quickly and find another car.

Scary how much a repair job can cost with these GTis :? I only had a new front bumper and resprayed bumper/bonnet/front wings and the estimate on the work (it was covered under my insurance, and the other party's fault) was in the region of £1800 :|

Are you going to be able to break the car?

I'm just going to take the money as I can't be doing with the hassle of taking it to bits and selling them. Not sure what happens once its been written off but can certainly give you the details of Solus. Had a test drive in an oil burning polo at the weekend - they go very well just handling is a bit rubbish. Should go even better with a revo unit - take BHP from 100 to 151 and torque from 194 to 231lb/ft. Mind you with a little person on the way bout time I grew up and got something sensible!

Question

Just interested in what people think - do I contribute to the repairs of the car (NU would pay £3500) or so I would need to find £1000 or do I take the write off value of about £5k. Having never tw@ted a car this hard before I'm not sure if it worth getting sorted and will it cause issues when I try to sell it? On the other hand if I get it fixed I have a fun car for another year or so.

Get the 5grand payout for sure, if you pay £1,000 that means that when you sell the car you are already a grand down. The car will not fetch £5,000 when sold by any stretch of the imagination. Definatly take the £5,000 and maybe buy another one?

Say you take the £1,000 you where gunna spend fixing it and put it with the £5,000 you have £6,000 you can find a f*****g corka for that. Leather, satnav etc... you would be crazy to fix the car IMO... remember it will be impossible to sell because of damage history!!
