Let me fill you in on some stuff you should know in general about turboing a car and a Polo Gti in particular.
Starting off, there IS a low limit as to how cheap you can do a cnversion like that, firstly from the point of view of reliability and secondly performance.
To make a conversion like that on THIS car you need
1)The turbo (naturally)...To my knowledge a T25 is nicely suited for this engine.Smaller would mean less performace and biger would mean too much turbo lag.This should set you back around 800 Euro (for a new one).I seriously don't recommend you buying a used turbo...
2)The exhaust manifold (custom made) to fit the turbo.This should set you back around 300+ Euro.
3)The intercooler...A FMIC costs around....600 ?? (maybe more, i could be wrong)
4)Here comes the good part.....FORGED PISTONS...These cost around the 1000+ Euro mark...Now you may ask...What do i need the forged pistons for ??Well...For starters, the Gti engines runs an 11.5:1 compression ration, something WAY too high for a supercharged engine.The safest AND BEST way to lower that is new pistons.And if you are serious about HP then high pressures and forged pistons is the way to go.You could lower CR with a thicker gasket, but thats not going to do you much good performancewise.
5)New injectors or (for a cheapo way) a fifth injector, spraying right at the intake.Cost goes from hmm...200 to who knows where for a full set...
6)Hoses...You definately need those...Good hoses (like say SAMCO) cost an arm and a leg...Ill give ya a REALLY fair cost of 100 Euro...VERY CONSERVATIVLY.
7)A piggy back ECU to control the fuel.This may range from a simple one injector unit (the extra one) to a full aftermarket system (highly recommended).My advice would be not to go cheap on that cause you dont wanna pick your engine pieces up.Cost ?? 800+ Euro for a serious unit.
Custom reprogramming for ECU or/and piggyback ECU.This MUST be done by a real pro (more or less rewriting the whole software) and is gonna cost you the rest of your body parts...Going around the 1000 Euro range.
9)The WORK on the engine.This involves replacing pistons, fitting manifolds, fitting injectors , fitting ECU, CUTTING THE FRONT OF THE CAR TO FIT TURBO AND IC...This EASILY can reach 2000 Euros if done by a serious tuner...
Hm..I hope im not frogeting something....Oh well...Lets pick up the check then...
Turbo=800
Manifold=300
Intercooler=600+
Pistons=1000+
Injector(s)=200 to who knows how much
Hoses=100+
ECU=300-1000
Custom Programing=~1000
Labor=2000
And the sum is....about 7000 Euro with FAIRLY low estimates at times....
As you can see....There is NO CHEAPO way to get real horsepower...And that is the reason i chose NOT to turbo my GTi...
But you may go right ahead...
P.S.If you have a better insight to the above prices, please let me know and ill be glad to revise...
hahaalso,, 1000 euro for mapping? who you getting it mapped by? God?
Well my dear friend it all comes down to WHAT you want for your car.jezmk4 wrote:poussou wrote:Ok....moynas wrote:Your taking a bath in't ya!!

yea... yea... yea
the chap with the supered lupo, speaking to him last weekend
some stacked copper gasket spacers. rotrex charger, dastek unichip, intercooler from a scrappy
he reckons about 160bhp more when its properly done
its been running for over 6 months
no problems, an it goes some
i cant see that he has spent over 1000 euro let alone 7000
also,, 1000 euro for mapping? who you getting it mapped by? God?
dave walker at emerald who everyone seems to think is the top chappy, charges 350 euros for a mapping sesh
