The km/h in the speedo are no big problem, you can get all kind of sticker, so you should be able to get one in km/h.
There are several "companies" who do these, e.g.

It might worth asking whether they can just print one for you in mph. but you could even do it by yourself, because they also just print them on a printer.
the MFA readouts. I don't know, but it's a computer, so maybe when the VW guys recode the keys they can also somehow just switch the display to mph and change the consumption display from fuel/distance (liters/100km) to distance/fuel (miles/gallon).

Personally if I were in your situation I'd forgo the idea of using a european clocks and consider investing in clocks designed for fitment to your model 9n. You'll save allot of hassle and frustration in the long run.
I'm sure you'd have no problems selling your ebay purchased clocks. I know Killis is looking for a set and our Dutch brethrens are always on the lookout for non-performance related modifications, so these would be ideal.
You may even make a little bit of money on top or break even.
