anybody know how to fix the original problem? gets on my t**s when i have to feed it back in.

yes, its one of the reasons, because having dust/hairs/crap does make it 'unsmooth' to retract back in.Mk2Adam wrote:i've heard that if the belts are dirty it doesn't retract properly, helps if you wash the belts in warm water. i'm sure i read that somewhere

i always wear my seat belt! the only time i haven't is sometimes in the work van when i'm poodling around the site, but i really should!
o and i don't wear a seatbelt in out second world war jeep, becuase it don't have any!
i used drive to a training centre which is 50 miles from mine, i used to pic a mate of mine up on the way and he never wears a seat belt. obviously i had mine on, but if i had crashed, imagine how u would feel if he was seriously injured, or worse. although it wasn't ur fault he wasn't wearing one, it would still be a nasty mess and it would effect you!
this mate of mine, took me out in his Nova GSI (first car) and we did 130mph down the motorway, me? strapped in and holding on for dear life. him? NO SEAT BELT!
he's been in an accident and has been pulled over and fined for it, but does he wear it now? nope!

If I was driving a Nova at 130 I don't think I'd bother with a seatbelt either, because whatever you hit is going to turn the whole affair into a liquor-centred rusty steel quality street anyhow..... personally i use mine to keep me in the seat because, with the cars i've had, the body roll and naff seats would see me flung right out of the window on the tighter corners 
if the numpty in the passenger seat (or drivers seat if im shotgun) wont belt up, then its their choice... but i wont shift if the folks in the back don't do it
however i'm not jumping on the "ridicule mysteryboy" bandwagon, as you can actually get a medical exemption from wearing them if the restriction causes some kind of physical problem.
Back to the question in hand - i've had this problem in two cars and dispaired of fixing it (well, ok, never bothered poking deeply enough into it after a quick flick through haynes made it look impossible)... i find that pulling it out a little further than it already is before you let it reel back in can help, and maybe repeating this if it's still slack. This works particularly well if there's enough exposed past the upper pulley bit to let you work a finger behind the vertical section and drag that instead (the main problem seems to be it loses the power to pull the belt through this pulley thing, if you do that bit for it the reel still winds the belt in quite well). Alternatively, if it's exposed further down near the floor (where the reel typically is) you can pull / jiggle it to encourage full retraction.
